There is an article in today's Hartford Courant regarding the recent registration requirements for assault weapons. The state received approximately 50k applications, roughly 15% of the estimated number of AW's in the state. As for the high capacity magazine declarations, they received 37k applications, far short of the "estimated" 2 million hi-cap mags in the state. For clarification- a the hi-cap declaration allowed a gun owner to declare multiple magazines on a single application, so in essence 37k gun owners submitted an application. The estimate for the hi-cap mags is based on the number of rifles sold in CT from 1998 to 2013, assuming 25% of those rifles were AR's that came with 2 magazines when purchased. So, it seems the state of CT has a problem- their new gun legislation has created 10's of thousands of new felons, and they don't know how to handle the situation! They actually think the low registration numbers are due to the public not being aware of the registration deadline! It will be interesting to see how this shakes out over the coming months, especially with the governor, a staunch Obama supporter, up for re-election this fall.
