I stopped at my lawyers office yesterday to get two of their cards. They have an attorney that is expert in firearms cases and is on 24 hr call. I have one in my wallet and one on file here at home. God forbid, I ever have to shoot someone, I want that info IMMEDIATELY available.

Memorize It, and the Firm's Name

The card at home is handy so the wife/etc. can call them for you, but the card in the wallet will probably be useless.

Remember, IF you are really ARRESTED and processed at a Jail, you will 85% likely NOT have access to your wallet when you are finally allowed to make your one phone call. Your wallet will have been logged in as either Personal Property or Evidence and be sitting in a box somewhere.

Some places (fewer these days) will actually NOT let you access your wallet to pay your own bail, even if you have the cash in the wallet. Somebody else must post for you, then you get your wallet back. That used to be a real treat that some Southern Sheriffs used in a 'Color Selective' manner to keep Black folks in jail just because of their skin color. This practice has mostly gone away, but I mention it here just to illustrate.

I'd memorize the number, as well as the Firm's name, in case you have to have someone look up the number for you.

I program the lawyers phone number on my cell. I would hope I will have called and left message before LEO gets there. (daytime he should beat me to Sheriff's office) Its a 24/7 number.

Futuristic, I plan to call the attorney immediately after the 911 call or after the shoot.

That's a good idea, but it won't work much of the time. Let me count the ways:

1. You are stuck holding the badguy at gunpoint until the cops arrive and disarm/cuff/stuff you.

2. You are wounded and are holding pressure on your wound until the cops arrive and disarm/cuff/stuff/transpo you to Hospital.

3. You aren't in a shooting, but are arrested on some bogus (or not) violation of the Concealed Carry regs. You go from talking to a Cop to arrested in about 2 seconds flat.

4. etc.

I still think memorizing the number is a far safer bet than depending on having access to either your wallet or your cellphone.

Depends on the sheriff's jail policy regarding access to personal property.

Some will not allow you any access to anything. Some will give you a phone book, while others will allow you to have your wallet to look up contact numbers. I've even seen some that will let you use your own cell phone to make a call to family and/or attorney.
