I recently picked up an LCR in 22lr as a trainer/companion to my LCR 357. This revolver is a great deal of fun to shoot and train with. I started wondering though, if needed, would this make an acceptable concealed carry weapon?

I did some informal testing with my Fackler box (using water as the medium) and 4 layers of heavy cotton. With the LCR and Aguila Interceptor solid point ammo I get the rough equivalent of 13-14 inches of gel penetration consistently. I don't intend to tout the 22lr as the ideal self defense cartridge but with that type of penetration from a snub nose its certainly nothing to scoff at. Just because the 22 may not be the best doesn't necessarily mean its not adequate. In my opinion anyway.

Thoughts?

Lots of critters met their maker after the crack of a 22lr...both 2 and 4 legged critters. It is certainly not ideal, but it certainly will work part of the time.

I don't want to be shot with a .22 or a .357 magnum :) But with that said, for years my standard summer carry was a little NAA in .22 Long Rifle with CCI Mini Mags, my wife still carries that little gun in her purse. We call it the 'pea shooter'. Of course in a defense situation I'd rather have the .357, but I can guarantee you the person I'm shooting at will be just like me and NOT want to be shot with anything..including a .22.

I bet those .22 LCRs are nice little guns, I'll have to try one sometime as I love .22 revolvers :) I have the .38 LCRx version currently.

Shooting into gel or water jugs does give you an idea of the penetration ability of the .22 but, if it strikes bone, things can change very quickly. Like you, I surely wouldn't want to be hit with any bullet. A .22 to the face or groin area will get an attacker's attention pronto.

I'll keep my .357 magnum. I've been practicing for 45 years.

I do tote a NAA in my weak side pocket as a BUG or back up to my BUG. I'm in deep do do if I get down to it, though. Having it in my off side pocket is so that I can get at SOMEthing if I'm wrestling with a BG using my strong arm and it's tied up in the tussle. Screw that .22 in his ear and bruise his ear drum. Maybe it'll distract him long enough that I can get to my .38 or .357.

Carry my 22 LCR daily due to physical limitations in my shooting hand.
Optimal?
No, but eight rounds of zippy 22lr is better than harsh language, a pocket knife, or 911.
