Im wondering what brand is the least smokey of black powder/pyrodex. Is there such a thing as a smokeless pyrodex?? The reason I am asking is because my nephew loves to come shooting with us, but he likes to see the impact of the round into the target (coffeecan) but due to the smoke hes kinda getting disenchanted with the smokeyness. Any ideas?

You could try APP (American Pioneer) or 777, but your guns might not like it as much.
Have you tried reducing your powder charge to make them lower velocity target loads, like 50 grains at 50 yards?
Maybe he can see better using binoculars...:)

I use APP and yeah, it smokes a little less, but it'll make ya cough a lung out if you fire 6 rounds fast, with no breeze to clear the smoke.

Haven't gotten around to trying 777 to see if it's smoke and fumes are any less caustic.

777 does indeed smoke less than pyrodex and MUCH less than real BP. I stopped using it because my Rifle hates it, but I had no issues with it in my Walker. I dont like to buy multiple types of powder so I use pyrodex now. My dad continues to use 777 in his pistol though and when we go shooting there is a real difference between the ammount of smoke he makes vs what I make with pyrodex.

Remember though, if you use 777 reduce your standard load by about 20%. Good luck.

I don`t like it and neither does my guns but 777 smokes the less of all the powders ...behind my 54 cal rifle with a dialed in load it hardly smokes at all .

I make my own powder, without sulfur.

While I love the smell of BP as well, I just have to be able to see my targets better, especially in an indoor range.

"Smokeless" (sulfurless) BP makes a lot less smoke, but a little less velocity too. I managed to get as much velocity as I would get using regular BP such as Swiss, by adjusting the amount of potassium nitrate in correspondence with the charcoal.

Other than that, I use Hodgdon's 777 with great effect.

I always thought pyrodex pellots were the least. However i find the best shooting is when the wind is just a tad in your favor. I hate it when im shooting my rifle and you almost need a spotter. because when you pull the trigger you cant see anything. I usually shoot steel. So at 100 yards you will hear it hit. but if it misses and the wind is in my favor i could usually see where it hit the burm behind it. otherwise if its too smokey and i dont have a spotter. then i usully just put it away and grab another rifle a smokeless.

cerF, good to meet ya. Do yourself and use The Holy Black, the is nothing better and nothin else more accurate to shoot in a BP Rev. If you have a problem with build up or binding, look up me Smokin_Gun, Wayne, or Pohil here, or email, or Voy/(60048) and ask about Lube Pills to put over the powder then press the ball in. I shoot all day, Rems or Colts.

Thanks for the help guys. I will try triple7 and let you know how it works out.

To you guys relpying with "why even bother" and "i thought thats why we shoot black powder" please read the post through before you respond. I myself dont mind the smoke, i actually enjoy it like most of you. My nephew, who is 7, likes to come shooting with me and he likes to see the round hit the target. THATS WHY I WANT LESS SMOKE.
