Real Black Powder VS. Substitutes

I've never shot pyrodex, only AP and GOEX in 4F. Anyways, I've always had very good results with AP. At the range yesterday, the guy next to me was having misfires with pyrodex in a Hawkens and using musket caps. Twice, he unscrewed the nipple, poured some pyrodex powder in the flash hole and still had a misfire. He using a few grains of my AP and it fired immediately.

From what I've seen, I have no faith in Pyrodex. Th holy Black is still the est but in lieu of it, I'll use AP. I've tried 777 but haven't liked the results either.

Gatofeo ~ Started with DuPoint FFFG black powder. Today, I shoot Goex FFFG black powder.

For you younger folk just getting into black powder shooting, Gatefo is mentioning a line of history of reliable solid shooting powder. And that is Goex, who purchased and continued producing powder from the old Dupont Plant years ago. Sure substitutes work, and are easier to find, but now that you've come this far, why cheat yourself out of a historic shooting experience with Goex fffg in your revolvers.

There is ONLY one black powder and that is BLACK! Period. No substitutes.
Have been making and shooting it since about 1953. There is no reason to go without real black if you make your own. Mine shoots at least as good as the best Swiss, clean and hot. Yes, and for all you "nay" sayers you can put your eye out (if you poke it with a sharp stick). Just don't get stupid, there is no cure for stupid.
