Hey I've got a problem with my Enfield's breechbolt head. The extractor spring can't go in because there is a huge chunk missing. The website I buy my gun parts from, (springfieldsporters.com) has replacement breechbolt heads in "0" and in "1". Which one do I need?

Depends on the headspace. The higher the number, the longer the bolthead (tighter headspace). If the rifle has been fired a lot, I'd go with the number 1.

Do you mean 'a huge chunk of the bolthead' or 'a huge chunk of the spring' ?
If there is a number visible on the bolthead then get that one. And preferably get access to the headspace gauges, .064 min and .074 max. And be prepared to adjust the striker protrusion (min .040, max .042) if you do change the bolthead

boresite, look at your existing bolt head. There should be a number, like 0, 1, 2, or 3 on it on the side that has the groove for the rail to track in. The best thing is to get the same number for a replacement if your old bolt is unserviceable. (Can you post a pic of your bolt head?) If your rifle is a non standard with a serial number that ends in a letter (like A), then there is a possibility that a replacement bolt head may not fit. The bolt head on a rifle like that may not have a number on the bolt head. Hopefully, that is not an issue (one of my 10 #4's has a non standard bolt head) for you. British Army spec for Field is .074. SAAMI gauges, like Fosters, are .070. A piece of masking tape on a Fosters gauge will usually do the trick though. Good luck!

Check on the surplusrifle.com forums

If you can see a number on the bolt head you should go with the same number. If the bolt is non standard and you can headspace the rifle with a gauge I'm sure someone on surplusrifle.com can tell you which bolt head you need.

DougW, I am jealous! I have two right now and am broke enough that I can't afford anymore right now. I had to back out of a deal on a Spanish FR8 and a really nice Mk1 in the last couple of months and I really regret both of them.

Don

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to get my dad to open up the gunsafe to check out the bolthead, and I'll try to put up some pics.

Breech Bolt Head (Side)

Breech Bolt Head (Top)

Bolt Slide (reading from left to right "G 1 A")

Lend Lease WWII Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1 receiver made by Savage

Same weapon, included are a brass buttplate and a vintage Enfield web sling

Due to the inscriptions "G 1 A" on the bolt slide, I have come to a conclusion that I should buy a new breechbolt head that is "1." The current breechbolt head doesn't have any number, but however has "S" marked on it twice for Savage.

The part of the head which should carry the number has broken off. It's impossible to say which will be the right size to choose; only gauging it with one in place will show.
G1A is of no great significance.

You'll probably be fine if you get a #1 head. It's not a safety issue, it's an accuracy issue.
