Lee rifle seating die crimp

Hello,

I have the Lee deluxe rifle die set for .270 Win, 7mm Mag, and .22-250.

I have the Hornady SST with cannelure for the 270 and 7mag.

I can't seem to find a way to get any sort of crimp from the bullet seating die that comes with this kit.

Also, it seems like the neck sizer die is a lot more difficult to re-size than the full-length sizer die.

I ended up just torquing the heck out of the neck sizer to get good neck tension and then not make a crimp into the cannelure. The ammo shoots great. But I have no crimp

Am I forced into a Lee FCD to get a roll crimp?

I use the RCBS dies for full-length resizing and bullet seating 375H&H and 8mm Mauser. I get a crimp into the cannelure with them.

I had the same problem with some Lee RGB Dies. It ended up being that I needed just lift the prss handle a little more after the bullet was seated. Just a little extra pressure and you could feel it set. It was for a .308. I hope it helps, one other thing to much pressure will crush the case necl.

Well dang, that is how the crimp on the RCBS works. I think, rofl.

With the RCBS, I just bumped the top of the stroke harder and harder till I got the crimp I wanted.

The Lee dies do NOT come with a built in crimp in the seating die.

Guys,

Unless you are loading for a rifle with an under the barrel tube magazine, there is no reason to crimp rifle cartridges. All you need is sufficient neck tension.

I see a hole up into the seating die, but I think there is no way for the case to reach up that far. So it appears there is no crimp with the seating die.

Guess I will look into getting another die.

SST have cannelure, the Interlock's don't.

Yea, I am not much on crimp as far as accuracy. But I am clumsy when it comes to hunting and would like the loads to sustain abuse while in the field.

Let me put it this way. I prefer to load FMJ because I drop the JHP and ding it up.

Roll or taper?

Is taper crimp the same as post-sizing?

I need to take some measurements to determine if I am getting some crimp or not.

RCBS die was easy. Just pull at end of stroke a little harder until crimp desired. My brother put some big nuts on there and they don't clear the breach lock in the Lee press. RCBS dies are so big and heavy, they don't move anyways.

It will put a roll crimp on the cartridge mouth, which is perfectly fine since it headspaces off of the shoulder.

There is no post-sizing with any rifle die that I am aware of. Lee makes a FCD for pistols that post-sizes, however.

If you get the "dead length" seater die, it has no crimping shoulder. The standard seating dies have the shoulder.

That said, if you crimp, just buy the FCD. No danger of forcing the neck like you have with the crimp built into the seating dies.
