I am loading for a T/C Encore 357 maximum with a 16.25 long barrel with a 1X16 twist and a set of Lee dies I tried loading Hornady's 140gr. FTX bullet and the bullet cannelure is too far up the bullet to seat it down on a max load of W296 and crimp on the cannelure. The overall length of the bullet is .800 long and the cannelure is.570 from the base of the bullet.

Can I lightly seat this bullet on a max load of powder and put a small roll crimp between the cannelure and the base of the bullet?

Will this work?

You can seat the bullet out as long as you want as long as it will chamber and the receiver will close. Pay no attention to the cannelure in your application, it is there to help hold the bullet secure while using in revolvers only. The 357 Max is a ton of fun, enjoy!

If you weren't using W296, I'd tell you to not crimp at all... but in your case, tap a light roll crimp in wherever you need to and you'll be fine.

Good bullet hold, neck tension is needed with 296 powder.

Measure the case neck before and after seating the bullets. On seating , the neck should expand .002" minimum.

Crimp just enough to remove the bell/flare in the case mouth. Should be fine for a single shot.

Doesn't Hornady use "short" cases when loading their FTX bullets? I remember reading that the cases are short to allow for "normal" OALs in their ammo using FTX bullets...

Like said above, you can load that bullet off the cannelure in this application. You do need to crimp to insure proper ignition of W296 or you could pass on the crimp. If you have a Lee FCD in your set you will be able to apply a full crimp since that die creates it's own cannelure.

Hornady does shorten the case slightly when loading factory LVR ammo to insure proper feeding in a levergun. Since you are shooting an Encore there is no need to do that especially since you are looking to load to a longer COAL.

Thanks for all of the advise, good stuff coming out of this forum. I ordered a Lee FCD die today.
