Maybe “universal” isn’t quite what it implies

Went to decap some new Lapua 6BR brass and found the pin was too big for the flash hole. I don’t want to ruin a bunch of brass so I thought I’d ask the question.

Is there a smaller pin available or do these case just have abnormally small holes?

Does the Lapua brass have the 0.058" (smaller than the std 0.062") flash hole? If so you may have to turn it down. I ran into this with the 6.5 CM SP brass. I have 2 universal deprimers, Hornady and RCBS, neither one fit till I reduced one. Lapua has gone to the smaller holes for a reason I do not known is true. They way it gives a better burn rate. I can see a smaller hole restricting the flash size. It may also be used as a Choke to restrict the high pressure spike. I just don't know. I do know that it can be a pain to deal with. You will probably need to contact Lee and see if they have a smaller version.

The pin in my Widden sizing die is smaller and fits just fine so the smaller flash holes must be an intended feature

Lapua .220 Russian we made 6 PPC cases out of also had the .060 flash holes.

I like the Squirrel Daddy decap pins for Lee dies.
Don't know if they are any smaller in Dia however.. Will measure one for you when I have a chance.

Maybe possible to chuck a Lee pin up in a drill and use some sandpaper on it.

look at the Redding universal decapping die set , the listing on Redding website says it comes with a separate pin for the smaller flash holes like 6br ,
Just an idea maybe worth a look at their website

My Lee pin measures .069 (measured with cheap calipers)
Squirrel Daddy pins tips are tapered. Measuring the part of the pin that actually decaps
.060 at the tip, .070 in the middle, .084 at the base
so probably still to big.
Might check with Squirrel Daddy and see if they might be able to make some up for you at a reasonable price. (or have some that are small enough)
They make a couple different pins for Lee dies.
Sturdier than the Lee pins if it matters.

The flash holes are smaller. Lee will turn you a smaller decapper, it’s just a phone call away.

The wise guy in me wants to say, buy a lathe and turn your own! After all isn’t this an excuse to buy one?

The practical guy in me, wonders if Lee has the right one. It seems they would.

The Redding small rod decapping pin is
.058 that comes with the universal decapping kit , according to the website,
