I was contemplating Ohio's CCW law - and the inconvenience of not being able to carry into any establishment that serves alcohol for consumption on the premesis - that is, just about every single restaurant - and I was wondering...

What are the stats, as far as legal CHL holders breaking laws in an alcohol-serving establishment - ie how many ppl have gotten drunk and did something stupid with their legally concealed handgun?

Does the Ohio rule have any good factual basis, or is it just more touchy-feely-not-based-on-reality kind of rule?

Good question. I wondered that myself. So, I went to the web site of the Michigan State Police and looked up thier CCW Annual Reports. In there I think you will find all of the information you need. I did not do any hardcore analysis but just a cursory check seems to lead the reader to believe that many of the CCW holders found guilty of a handgun-related crime were under the influence of alchohol at the time. See the reports for yourself HERE

:D

Yeah, but all the alcohol-related crimes shown in those reports are either DUI or CCW with a positive BAC; status crimes, if you will.

Any hard stats to indicate that CHL holders get drunk and start shooting at things on a regular basis?

Interesting site.

So basically, of the 63000 permits issued, only 92 charges (not people) were brought againt people who had permits in 2001-2002.

Of the 55 revocations, 36 look like the holder violated some law.

36 / 63000 = .057% of holders.

Not much of a problem there, especially when the crime was merely having the CCW and alcohol simulatinously.

Minnesota Info...

Check out this link to the Minnesota DPS website. Scroll to the bottom of the page and look at 2003 Permit to Carry Report or the 2001 and 2002 Concealed Carry Study. In all of the above you will find the conviction numbers for carry permit holders for that year. You'll have to skim the reports because they include other things, like number of permit by country, but the number you are looking for are pretty easy to find.
