This rifle is appealing to me because it takes AK mags where as a Saiga doesn't. I actually like the ones with the thumbhole stock too. Especially as pictured with a 30 round mag; it has an aesthetically appealing quality to it, I believe. The same holds true for me with a Mini 30, but they are too much money and don't have 30 rounders that are known to work from what I've read. Despite the fact that regulated jursidictions don't allow 30 round mags, I still like the Mac-90 for the easy 30 round potential upgrade if a matter of life and death.

This rifle has no so called "evil features" that I'm aware of, and from everything I've read about the rifle so far in the THR archives; might be the only decent thing that's been made in China quality-wise.

I'm wondering how come no one ever suggests a Norinco Mac-90 when discussing good, legal, semi-autos for California or for other gun regulated areas?

..Whats "evil features"...? anti's think they are all evil...The Mac-90 is a great gun, but are no longer imported to the U.S.....not from CA so I don't know about all the gun laws out there, everything pretty much a go here in IN.

MAK-90's (I see both MAK-90 and MAC-90...but I'm about 99.99% sure MAK-90 is the correct designation) are fun rifles. I've had one since the mid 1990's. A few years back, I did go the 922 route so I could put a side folder stock on mine.
Still got the thumbhole stock, which is ok. I prefer the standard AK stocks though.
MAK-90 receiver thickness is 1.5mm (.060") rather then the 1mm (.040") on most other AK style rifles.
61Chalk is right...there hasn't been any MAK-90's imported since Clinton wrote one of his infamous executive orders.

Just buy the MAK-90 furniture off of Gunbroker and convert a Saiga to get the look you want. A Saiga will take AK mags if you install a bullet guide.

I don't care how it looks per se. I want an AK, but i can't have one in my state/city.

I'd just as soon buy a MAK-90 and be done with it -- if I can -- than convert stuff. Assuming it does in fact comply by not having banned features. Is this so?

Despite that I'm moving right outside the city limits, and am almost sure I can have this rifle at my new address, since I'll only be subjected to State law now and not city law. . . I'm almost tempted to pay the $240 for a NYC rifle permit; buy a MAK-90 and try to register it; just to see if I can; and just to prove how stupid the laws are. I guess it couldn't hurt to have either an NYC rifle permit, in case I move back, and a new MAK-90 (worst case scenario).

I'll call them "so called 'evil features'" from here on . . . I thought putting the phrase in quotes was mocking it enough. Sorry about spelling -- i guess that explains why so few search results for "Mac-90".

NY assault weapon ban names Norinco, Mitchell and Poly-Tech AKs as banned assault weapons.
The Norinco MAK-90 is a named assault weapon and is banned in NY.

NY has a "large capacity ammunition feeding device" ban.
Unless you acquire pre-ban AK magazines you can not possess/use them in NY.

NY Penal Law section 265.00
As used in this article and in article four hundred, the following terms shall mean and include:
22. "Assault weapon" means
(d) any of the weapons, or functioning frames or receivers of such weapons, or copies or duplicates of such weapons, in any caliber, known as:
(i) Norinco, Mitchell, and Poly Technologies Avtomat Kalashnikovs (all models)
23. "Large capacity ammunition feeding device" means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device, manufactured after September thirteenth, nineteen hundred ninety-four, that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition; provided, however, that such term does not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.

You can posses it in upstate NY, the same as you could posses it under the old Federal AWB.

You're SOL if you want an MAK in NYC though as they have a much stricter AWB.

It's the same law except the state allows one of the tactical features and the city doesn't allow any.

Although strangely enough I'm yet to see any manufacturers listed by name as banned anywhere -- except the city -- till now. Funny how the State does in fact list manufacturers in the code, but the NRA doesn't mention it on their site when summarizing NY State Gun Laws.

Oh well, I'm waiting on delivery of my SKS; that's good enough for now considering how expensive everything is . . .
