There is a huge Walmart located just across the river from me in Vancouver, WA. I'm a legal resident of Oregon and am interested in purchasing a 10/22 and a Remington 870 shotgun. Are there any laws that restrict me from purchasing a rifle and shotgun in Washington?

Thanks for the help.

Legally, no there is nothing that would stop you from buying a long gun from a dealer in Washington.

Now for a practical matter, WallyWorld would probably freak out and not let you buy them per some arcane corporate policy. Then there is the matter of our Washington State sales tax that you wouldn't have to pay a dealer in OR.

One, hello follow Oregonian. You in Portland? I'm in Hillsboro. Let's meet sometime. :)

Two, yes you can buy a rifle or shotgun across state lines. Both the laws of the states of Oregon and Washington specifically allow that.

As for the sales tax, my understanding is that if you're an Oregon resident, and you can prove so, you're exempt from the sales tax of Washington, or any other state, for that matter. :)

Good luck.

Lonnie,

How do you get out of paying sales tax by purchasing something in a different state?

If you live in the Portland area of Oregon or the Coeur d'Alene area of Idaho you can shop in Clark and Spokane counties sales tax free by showing your drivers license. Washington passed this law to get shoppers from adjacent states to patronize Washington businesses.

Yes. Many businesses located close to the Oregon border will ask if you are an Oregon resident ahead of time so that they can process the transaction more efficiently.

Just FYI the tax thing for oregon residents is applicable in all washington counties. Its just that a lot of register jockeys in the northern parts of the state dont realize it. I think this is pretty much a national thing. Hence why you dont have to pay state sales tax if you buy something from a mail order vendor UNLESS you happen to be in the same state as the vendor (and that state has a sales tax)

actually, the full faith and credit clause in the US constition allows us to avoid sales tax nation wide. my government teacher in highschool tested (and succeeded) this when he bought a car while in florida. the dealership ended up calling the state capitol (dept of commerce, IIRC) to verify the oregon law, but got out of the sales tax on the car.

Thanks for the information everyone. I knew about the sales tax stuff but didn't know about firearms purchasing. Anyone know if that Mega-Walmart off 205 in Vancouver has good stuff?

Safado,

Why not buy it at the Wallyworld on 82nd?

Save a lot of trouble and a lot of gas.

I think there is also one in Troutdale.

As for us Or Y gun shooters getting together, let me know.

Also, before you buy in Vancouver check out Bi-Mart. There are several in the Portland area. They sell guns and usually have a better selection than Wal-Mart.

You might want to check out Bi-Mart on 122nd & Halsey. Bought my 10/22 there and frequently purchase my reloading supplies there as well.
