I would like to give my son one of my handguns as a gift. I live in Missouri and he lives in Colorado.

Can I legally ship (UPS or FedEx) the handgun to an FFL dealer in Colorado (if we find one that will accept it) so my son can pick it up from the dealer?

Thanks

Alex

Yep, that's how you need to do it. I did the same thing when I gave a pistol to my sister in another state.

At the time auction arms had a utility that allowed me to look up ffl dealers in a particular zip code that were willing to handle transfers.

Musher,
Do you know if any additional paperwork is required to document the fact that I would no longer have the handgun in my possession? (I do keep a record of all my purchases, sales, and trades.)

Thanks for your help,

Alex

Handguns are not titled like cars and boats are. Basically, whoever possesses the gun is the owner. Of course, if your state registers firearms then you’d have to comply with their process of disposing. Otherwise, you can just send it and that’s that.

What graystar said.

I don't know the rules in your state. Where I live, there's no requirement for recordkeeping.
