I was having some magazine issues with my new SPX so I called Mossberg. They told me they no longer use the tapered end mag spring and would send me a newer version. The original mag spring was 23" long. The new one is not tapered, but is is 29" long. it went into the tube, and the shells load fine, but I haven't fired the gun since it went in. Is the newer spring supposed to be 29"? I would rather avoid cutting the spring, and doubt I would need to since it came direct from Mossberg. Anybody have an SPX without the tapered end who could measure it for me?

26" to 29" is the correct length for 18" to 22" barrel shotguns with full length mag tubes. If you can get the full 7+1 capacity and it feeds reliably & with authority leave it along.

The original factory SPX was too weak. It's good to see Mossberg making the right corrections. The 590 original factory springs have the same problems.

It should be noted that some 2 3/4 inch shells are longer than other 2 3/4 inch shotgun shells. I found that when I loaded Federal shot shells in my SPX that it dropped from a 7-round capacity to 6-rounds. The shells I was using; Federal LE132-00 reduce recoil buck were just about >.< that much longer than others. After you add that up six times >......< it was just enough to keep the last shell from going up the tube.

I solved the problem by switching to a magazine spring from a 590, it was the same length, but looked like slightly thinner metal. Whatever the cause, it allowed me to regain an 8-round capacity with 100% reliability so far.

(I don't claim credit for this, someone on AK47.net had the same problem and came up with this solution. I'm merely passing on his solution.)

I have a 590 that I bought in 2007 and I can confirm that the spring was too short. It was easy enought to fix but it really surprised me that Mossberg would screw something like this up. It's not like they just started making these shotguns yesterday.

I just got an spx and noticed that when unloading by ejecting from the mag tube the last round won't eject all the way because there isn't enough spring pressure. In fact I will have to push it back in to the tube and unload it by cycling thru the chamber first. I know that is traditional but I bought it partly for the reason that you could unload it easier. Hopefully Mossberg will replace my spring too. Not really impressed with the SPX yet. I got it used and it FTF'd 4 out of the ten rounds I fired. I gave it a good cleaning though so in the morning I'll find out how that will help. Part of the problem may have been an unneccessary (sp?) heatshield interfering with the gas piston thingy.

anyhow. I just wanted to spout off.

Thanks for this link. I will check the spring in my 930 SPX. Ashamed to say I've had this gun for months and put nary a round thru it.
