So I was looking at a Mossberg 930 SPX online and run across this forum

On this forum it says in the first thread that basically the 930 SPX sucks have any of you fired it or know somebody that has had it? Give me your ideas fluently because i know somebody that might want one and if this shotty truely sucks i need to convince him to get something else instead of a waste of money. Thanks!

I bought a Mossberg 930 SPX in November 2007 and over the following 5 years, I put hundreds and hundreds of rounds through it. Except for an occasional, partial failure to eject of cheap Federal and Winchester target loads purchased at Walmart, the gun functioned flawlessly. Near the end of this September past, I attended a week long shotgun instructor school and used the Mossberg. Again it performed flawlessly. They're a good gun at a great price.

I suspect that most of these accounts you read where the writer starts by saying, "I took my new ________ to the range today, I got one malfunction after another, it's a POS, yadda, yadda, yadda....," the genius involved didn't clean and lubricate the gun before shooting it for the first time. They literally bought the gun, drove from the gun shop straight to the range, pulled it out of the box, loaded it, and started banging away. Now if you do this, the firearm "may" function without a hitch, but if it doesn't, don't blame the gun.

I've put a couple hundred rounds through mine in the
last 18 months. It shoots fine and cleans up easy. The
recoil is less than my model 500.

I bought a 930 SPX a few months back. Have about 200 rounds through it so far with no malfunctions. Shooting both 00 buck and cheap birdshot. Stripped and lubed it before first use and then again after 100 RDS. My only issue is the mag only holds 5 2 3/4" shells for some reason. It should hold 8 I believe. Mag spring may be too long - I haven't taken the time to investigate. I bought it as a range toy so not too concerned. Other than that, the gun is fine and really fun to shoot.

Joe,

My mag tube went from holding 6 to 7 rounds by swapping out the factory follower with the GG&G one. I think the follower must have been hanging up somewhere inside the tube. I also bought a couple new mag springs directly from Mossberg. They redesigned the spring from when they built mine in 2007.

Thanks Trooper Steve. Makes sense. 5 is what it would hold sans extension, should hold 7 with extension (not 8 as I mis-stated in my earlier post).

I had it out at the range again today. Another 40 rounds through with no failures. 3 different brands of birdshot (let my buddy shoot it using his ammo to see if it would feed) and some Estate 00 buck.

You're welcome.

I have to say that, for the money, the Mossberg 930 SPX can't be beat. Mine shot everything on the first day I took it to the range. Even my $1900 Benelli M4 Tactical wouldn't do that. The Benelli's recoil spring is quite stout when new and it took several hundred full power shells being shot through it before it would reliably cycle the light stuff.

Now long term, I think it's questionable that the Mossberg would hold up as well as the Benelli (which purportedly is good through 25K shells before parts need replacing), but for most of us mortals, we'll never put enough shells through either for this to become an issue.

I've had mine for about 2 years and it's been great with everything I've put through it from mostly 00 buck to the cheap target loads and everything in-between. It's my HD shotgun. Love it.
