Hi everyone..

Well, after about 2 weeks, my Les Baer Premier II has finally arrived to my FFL (Ade's Gunshop). I got the opportunity to look over the pistol while I did the paperwork. As many know, I purchased the gun through www.sportingarms.com . Becky was the only one that I've spoke to, she took my calls very curteously, answered all my questions. She made me feel confident of ordering over the internet, since I've never purchased a gun outside of California. My emails were promptly returned, after I emailed them the status of the purchase. I requested a call or email when the payment reached SA, but never got it. Only til' I emailed them did I get a response. But, Becky @ SA was very prompt to return my email telling me that they were awaiting a shipment of PII's. Well, she told me most likely the shipment would come in on Friday, well... the next day on Wednesday, I get a email with the tracking number. Not only did she beat the scheduled date that the shipment was suppose to arrive, my gun arrive at the dealer the date she stated she was suppose to receive the shipment from LB. Not bad!! :D

Overall, my experiences with Sporting Arms was very pleasant, I'd definitely deal with them again. Becky was professional & curteous. Two thumbs up!

As to the PII, I got the opportunity to open it. Boy, gotta love that beautiful case that comes with the gun. A nice, very square, dehorned, cardboard box. :biglaugh: Opened up, and I got a gun in a bag, and a stainless magazine wrapped in paper. Boy, the gun was dripping in oil! My dealer looked at me, and gave me 2 rags to wipe the gun off so I can handle it. LOL. Well... first thing he said was, those LB's are very stiff. He told me a story about the last LB he had come in, he told the guy that bought the gun that he couldn't open the action. The guy that bought the gun said he was strong and it'd be no problem. Ended up that guy couldn't open the action of his gun either! Well... I remembered the trick of applying pressure to the recoil plug, so as my dealer walked away expecting me to fiddle with the gun trying to open the action, it took me 2 seconds to have the slide locked back. :D

What I noticed, the gun wasn't nearly as tight as the other Les Baers I've handled. Its definitely tight, but I can easily rack the gun. I can even press check the gun without any problems. Heard that most new LBs were difficult to presscheck. Furthermore, there is no slide to frame play at all. Feels like one solid piece of steel. No play at all on the barrel hood to frame, nor the barrel crown to bushing. Wood on the gun is actually kinda nice, my biggest complaint I noticed on many LBs were the average looking wood. But those grip screws, blah! Then of course, the ping pong paddle sized thumb safety. No sharp edges on the thumb safety, nor the grip safety. Checkering on the frontstrap was very comfortable, but I think the oil kinda dampened the sharpness. :biglaugh:

There is one questions though that I'd like answered. Upon inspection, I noticed that the front and back of the slide is slightly dehorned. Definitely dehorned. But the edge running from front to back on the bottom of the slide doesn't look dehorned. Is this natural? My gun isn't the Tactical model which has the dehorned edges, its just a regular PII. I'm curious about this. Are other regular PII's dehorned on the front and rear of the slide?

Well... I can't wait, I have my 10 days to wait. But, actually it'll take 25 days for me to pick up my gun since my dealer is gonna go on vacation starting the day before my 10 days. 25 days to wait.... :biglaugh: :bawling:

Bummer!!

25 days? :what:

Can't he postpone his vacation by a few days for a loyal customer?

Well, enjoy the pistol, I'm sure it is very nice.

All the best,
Ken

Hey Ken,
I wish I can get him to postpone his vacation, wouldn't that be great? I try not to think about it, because 10 days is long enough. And then 15 more days on top of that?! Thats a 150% wait! :what: :D

I noticed in the other thread you were thinking about a semi-custom pistol also? Well... we can go shoot at Angeles again I'll let you run a few magazines through it. But gotta wait almost a month til' i get it. :p

dmftoy1: Yes, ten day waiting period. Sucks huh? :(

Any Premier II owners able to answer if standard PII's come slightly dehorned on the front and rear edges of the slide?

Thanks! :)

Sorry about the wait, maybe you could have got Ades to get the serial # before the gun arrived and DROS it but I'm not sure if that is ok to do but I could have sworn I've done it before.

So the Les Baer does not have a full length guide rod?

Terrible about the wait, I've waited close to 40days because if the gun comes in used, some delears make you wait a month before it is cleared as not stolen before it can be let out of the store! It really pisses me off sometimes but once you own a lot of other guns I just try to not think about it and use the others.

Hell, 25-40 days is bad, when I was in the military, I had my dad buy a beautiful S&W 25-2 for me right before I left CA to go back to my overseas duty station. Had to wait 8 months or so to shoot gun. I can swear I almost dreamed about that gun, I even knew the serial # by heart!

"my biggest complaint I noticed on many LBs were the average looking wood. But those grip screws, blah! Then of course, the ping pong paddle sized thumb safety."

Can't coment on the slide as own P II had the Tac dehorn. My Baer is around 6 yrs. old now and the grips were not exactly "exibition" grade, but do like his idea of flat bottom and covered MSH pin. Neutaral on the screws as generally r/r them with others anyways not to mention a Baer deserves Spegels or Simonich grips {my 2-Bits!}

Have talked with Les quite a few times and he knows buyers aren't particularily fond of the oil bath in bag thing. But it's better than getting a Glock filled with dirty machining oil as he uses or used when I spoke with him about it straight Break Free. {not CLP} Since he has a background in building racing engines am assuming the pistols are made squeaky clean just like the inside of a top-flight enginge would be inside befoore it was closed up, and then drenced in good lube. He also doesn't know how long the gun is going to sit in stock or where it's going soemtimes. What hel told me to do was just wipe off the exterior and shoot it as is until it was broken in then clean and lube with whatever you wanted to use. While I got the 1 1/2" gun it's still as tight as a bank vault but hand cycles like there was no metal to metal contact.

Am a Lefty and that safety does stink. It's actually one used for slide side shields. Eventually went with a Brown but I did get used to it.

FWIW, one of the best things I like about it is it even makes my own generic plated IDPA hand loads group like match ammo!

Don't think there's much chance you WON't enjoy the Hell out of yours!

My PII is not dehorned on the front and rear of the slide, but it isn't as sharp as a Springfield.

Majik- Sporting Arms is top notch. They're a couple hundred miles away from me, so I can actually pop by their location and pick up a gun if I happen to be in Dallas. Becky is great to deal with, and they're stocked better (with more 'high end' stuff) than most other places I've been. It's really the only place where I've been that I've been able to get the feel of a number of guns I've been looking at buying.

Hey Paul,
Mine didn't come with a FLGR, were they suppose to? The PII's ive seen came with the GI rod and plug set-up, as well as mine. Thought about FLGR's though to help put a little more weight on the front end. Its not as tight as most Baers I have handled, so I dont need to press the recoil plug to get it out of battery and rack the slide. Hmm... which FLGR to use, I only intend to use this gun as a range/target gun. I wanna get a 1 piece FLGR. Any recommendations?

C.H. Luke,
Good info you just gave, thanks. So, the decision would be, whether or not its needed to detail strip the pistol if supposedly its already cleaned and bathed in good oil. I hear the people at LB and SA say to just shoot the bejeezus outta the pistol, then clean it afterwards. Hmm...

In regards to the huge left sided ambi safety, know why? I figured the ambi safety would be useful for both right and left handed shooters equally, yet the leftside (right handers) is HUGE compared to the skinny rightside (lefthanded shooters). Doesn't quite make any sense.

Ankeny, thanks for the info, thats what I was pretty much looking for.

Teombe, I must say, lucky you! They're a great bunch to work with, or actually... Becky was great to work with since I have no idea where Tom was when I called or emailed them :D

Thanks guys!

Yes I agree his recent wood is not as nice.

Now you should see his old Logo'ed grips. I even have a belt buckle with the logo put on it. Those are really really nice. I was truly shocked when I got my 10mm and it had the now standard checkered grips with no logo on them. What a disappointment.

I don't know if it was suppose to come with a flgr, I just assumed it would for some reason. I have little experience with flgr's or higher end 1911's beyond the Kimber Gold Match and higher end Colts like the Gold Cup Trophy. I can't even remember if they have a flgr either!

It seems a lot of the custom or higher end 1911's are including them but there is a number of smiths and people like myself that do not like them for various reasons as I'm sure you know as you are somewhat more of a 1911 person than myself. I mainly don't like them as it makes the pistol harder to fieldstrip and you neee that bushing wrench I never seem to have around.

Until like 3-4 years ago I was not really in to 1911's except for the nostalgia/look factor, I though it was an overrated old guys gun which is strange as I like revolvers but owning and shooting more of them has changed my opinion.
