My wife and me set out this weekend to pick out an autoloader for her. She is not recoil sensitive, as a matter of fact she loves shooting +P .357 loads out of her 686, but she wants to take a carry-class in the summer so we needed something that was a bit more concealable. We took our time fondling Glocks, XD, M&P, HK USP (close second), all the usual suspects but this is what she liked the most:

Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail .45
I'm so proud of her. I swear that I had no part in what she picked (I'm a bit of a 1911-kinda guy) We will be taking it out to the range today, range report will follow

Nice pistol.
I guess she will not mind the weight so much if she carries it in her purse.
But on the side I find 1911's to be too heavy and they pull my pants down....of course I have narrow hips.

If she ever gets tired of you, send her to Colorado. We know how to appreciate women like her (said in a friendly and envious way). :D

There are no +P .357 magnum loads. Did she shoot one of these before she bought it ?

I fell into the trap of selecting my wife's first gun, a Smith & Wesson 642 with a laser grip. I figured she would prefer a .38 in a snubby. Well, the trigger was the worst I've seen. She really hated shooting it. So did I. So, I had a pistolsmith smooth it out and reduce the trigger pull. It was OK, but while the gun was in the shop, I let her shoot my SA XD-45 Tactical. My God, she took to both the larger gun and larger caliber. Now, she grabs the XD when we go to the range. She considers the XD her gun now. She can go through a lot of my .45 ACP inventory with those 15-round mags.

The worst range report ever

Well my fellow gun lovers and loverettes, we took the gun out to the range yesterday. Turned out to be a humongous dissappointment. The gun couln't string two shots together (failure to feed, failure to eject, slide unbelievably tight) and the slide finally locked up solid after about 10 shots. I couldn't move it and the rangemaster (i showed it to him) said he had never seen a thing like that before.
I did fieldstrip it before and cleaned+relubed it, Birchwood Casey Teflon gun oil on the moving parts + Kroil in the barrel. We were shooting reloads at first
but they were shooting perfectly well in my Kimber. We switched to Magtech ball .45 for the Dan Wesson and that went OK for 2 shots and then the final lockup happened:mad:
We took it back to the store and got refunded with no issues but it was funny that about 6 of their employees came over to look at it and mutter their disbelief. I know this was a fluke, if we find another one here in the Twin cities, we'll probably get that one and try again because that gun felt about perfect in my and her hand. So this is not going to turn into a anti- Dan Wesson/CZ rant, this was just unfortunate and were going to go around the gunshops today to fondle some more guns and maybe find another CBOB....

If that was a new Dan Wesson I'd utter disbelief also. A very strange occurance I'm thinking. If you are going to go for that pistol anyway, why not order it from the same shop. They were good enough to refund your money, so it seems they are a decent retail outlet.

Wow. That is wacky.

My wife got talked into a Taurus 85 Ultra-Lite snubby by the owner of our local gun shop. She hated the thing. He gave us $50 less than what we paid for it in trade, which was nice. She ended up with a S&W M&P 9mm Compact, which she really liked with the exception of the trigger. I sent it out for a trigger job and now she loves it. The problem is that its too big to conceal under most of her clothes, so she needed an additional gun for on-body carry without radically changing her wardrobe. I took her to the gun store and came out with a Kahr P9 Covert.

We also had to set her up with a belt and holsters and still need to pick up a SmartCarry and a belly band. Close to $2000 later, she's about set up and is working on getting her license.

Next week, we are going to Nevada for four days of vacationing in Las Vegas and four days on handgun training at Front Sight. All of this is costing me a small fortune (although the Front Sight class was mostly free), but I figure that the piece of mind of knowing that my wife can handle herself is well worth it.

It was a new Dan Wesson. The retail store in question was Cabelas here in Rogers Minnesota and kudos to them, they handled everything professionally. After all it wasnt their fault at all. They did not have any other CBOB's in store. And yeah, I know there is no such thing as a +P .357, That was kind of a dumb statement on my part. I was merely referring to the fact that some (especially European loads like Fiocchi and S&B) are loaded a little hotter than what I would consider normal (like CCI blazer). My wife just loves the extra flames shooting out.

:what::what::what::what::what:

Well, it happens. I took a brand new Ruger SRH to the range one day, and it seized up after two rounds. The third round had been warped somehow (don't recall at the moment, but a whole lot of eyebrows went up among the range officers when I showed it to them).

Sent it back to Ruger, they fixed it, no problems since.

If you can't find another Dan Wesson, you could, of course, try Bud's Guns online. Or you might look at a Kimber Ultra Carry. Yes, they are pricey. And yes, some people have problems with Kimbers. But most of us who own them just swear by them.

Good luck. Look at it this way, it has to get better from here....

We went to the Gunstop today. Easily the best gunshop around these parts and ordered a new Dan Wesson CBOB from them. Should be with us by Monday. I agree about the Kimber Ultra Carry, I know I love my Kimber but I think my wife had her mind set on the Dan Wesson. So this story will have a part 2. Stay tuned sportsfans:)
