I saw a 7 shot small package s&w the other day and today a 8 shot taurus 357 I'm curious about these revolvers show me what u got and tell me the pros and cons u feel thanks in advance.

The pros: An extra shot.

The cons: You burn through a box of 50 faster. :)

Model 586-7, limited edition 7-shot version of the old Smith & Wesson classic:

When I was purchasing my 686+, it was between it and a Ruger GP100. Honestly, the extra shot was not the deciding factor. The 686 just balanced so nicely in my hands, and pointed so naturally, even with the standard Hogue Monogrips that just didn't work for me.

I really enjoy my 686+. It is accurate, reliable, packs plenty of punch with it's 4" barrel, but is still compact enough for nightstand/HD duty. The SA pull is an absolute Gem, though I rarely shoot it that way. The DA pull is quite good, but I'm thinking of an action job one day to smooth it out some more. Shooting Magnums out of the gun isn't at all painful, and 38s are a pleasure to shoot - almost no muzzle rise to speak of.

Used ones are pretty common and can be had for excellent prices. Though they are only 6 shot models, Summit Gunbroker has used 686s starting at $330.

Here is my 686+:

I have the Taurus 608 eight shot and have put about 5,000 rounds through it and never had a problem. The 6.5 inch ported barrel is very accurate and light recoil.

I just recently picked up another 686+.
It's in the bottom right of the picture.
The last one I had was a problem for me.
I was so used to shooting a six shooter, that I kept shooting six and dumping brass. The problem was dumping 6 empties and one live one every darn time.
I'm willing to give it another try.:D

jad0110...

Does your 686+ have a lock or not ? Do they make speedloaders for this gun or not? And please if it is not too much to ask for could I see a better side view of the #2 picture . Thanks and take care ;)...she sure is a beauty :D.

Thank you for the compliments. She is a beauty, except she does have a wart on the left side of the frame (yes, a lock). Wish it wasn't there, but since the gun is totally reliable, it isn't a show stopper for me. 686-5s and older don't have the lock.

HKS does make 7 shot-speedloaders for this gun, labeled "587". So does Maxfire http://www.speedloaders.com/. I'd really like to try out the Maxfires someday.

A pic is included of the left side when it still had the Pachmayr grips on it:

I don't feel there is a whole lot of difference between a 6 or 7 shot revolver, but I really like my 686 Mountain Gun. I never liked the L frame until I got one without all the excess metal under the barrel. This one is one of my favorite guns.

Dave, that is an excellent photograph. I can see why it is a favorite.

1895 Nagant.

Pros: Cheap to buy, extra shot

Cons: Ammo is high, takes forever and a day to load/unload

Dont have a picture but

I have a 327 TRR8 (nice picture above) I love the gun, but the houge monogrips seem to interfear with loading 357s when using the moon clips. The 38's get in just fine but the longer 357s cannot be lined up as fast because they back of the shell bumps the grip...I was going to cut the rubber away, anyone encounter this?

LeadPumper,

How do you like your Maxfire Speedloaders? Can you give us a short, informal report on them? Thanks!

I found the Hogues that originally came on my 686+ would not always allow the empty case closest to the grips to drop free. Using a speedloader wasn't impossible, but it was a little tricky. Since I don't like finger grooves anyway, I just replaced them with a set of Pachmayr Compacs (see my 1st pic in post #7) and had no more troubles. I've since replaced them with the Ahrends Goncalo Alves stocks pictured elsewhere.

Here is my 686 +. I don't know any cons to tell you it is a great shooting well balanced handgun. I have had no problems and have no complaints.

Maxfire...Not!!!

jad0110- to be honest, I took that pic just after I got the gun (used). The moonclips and Maxfires came with it and I had yet to use them. If I had tried using them first, I never would have had them in the photo.

As of now they sit in the bottom of a spare parts bin. I was really disappointed in how hard they actually were to use. You have to grasp the cylinder much harder with the Maxfires over a 'regular' style speedloader. It dosen't 'fall' in like an HKS or Safariland will. It hangs up on everything do to it's length and you can only put it on the cylinder one way, otherwise you can't 'wipe' the ammo into the cylinder.

No really, load 'em by hand. It's faster.

Ric- that engraving is awesome! (S&W PC shop?) Love the grips too, who's are they?

Observations:

My JM PC627 V-Comp is a keeper - great trigger - had to have it. 8-shot moonclips don't load 'automatically', like the 625's .45 ACP do. Ammo sensitive and fragile moonclips, too. Best loaded manually. Still, for SPC, I found the black/black sights not the easiest to acquire quickly.

I had my new 5" h-l 686+ for a while when I traded another revolver for the 627. It came with Ahrends grips, HiViz sight, V-notch rear - great bargain ("Stocking Dealer Exclusive"). I recently went 'back' to the 686+ - that 'searchlight' HiViz is quick to acquire - makes up for the one less round. It points well - about the same mass as the 4" 686+, the longer barrel offset by the missing lug. Works great with HKS #587 Speedloaders, with .38's or .357M's.

Given a money is no option choice, I'd probably opt for the 627. The 4" 686+ is far more practical. Below is my 6" 66-6, bought new 9/03 and immediately fitted with the Ahrends and a HiViz, and the later released 5" "Stocking Dealer Exclusive":
