lets see some sporterized army surplus!

I might have to do that... I already have a 6.5x55 swede that is a sporterized mauser. But as you guys said I wouldn't be out much... It still has the old style safety on the back of the bolt with a scope the safety won't function.
The solution there is to add a Timney (or Bold) trigger with the side mounted safety. I have a mildly sporterized Swede that has the Timney trigger with the side safety. The original safety is still there as well, it's just left in the "fire" position all the time.

Actually Kimber did market a sporterized Mauser in the recent past. Not the original Kimber of Oregon but the current incarnation. Don't know what they're trading for now though.
This one was posted a few pages back in this thread. Sporterized by Kimber of America after the original Kimber of Oregon went belly up, but before the company moved to New York (circa 1996-'98). The folks at Kimber bent the bolt, fitted the Beuhler-style safety, drilled and tapped the action, refinished it, and added a s/s fluted barrel chambered in .30-'06. I added the Timney trigger, then had the barrelled action bedded in a stock I found at a gun show. IMO, a good value because the cost of all that work today would easliy exceed what I paid for the rifle last summer.

MAN!! You guys have got me wanting to dig in the parts bins and build another one! I've got a K.Kale Turk action (large ring receiver with small ring barrel threads) that I have already ground the charger hump, D&T'd and blued waiting to be put to use!

Well, since lobo9er hasn't picked up his Sporterized Lee Enfield yet, I'll show you mine!

I got a text from my girlfriend one night wondering if I've ever heard of a gun made by Lee N. Field because a coworker was trying to get rid of one and knew that she shot. Needless to say, I ended up with it because I'll reload for it and she still gets to shoot it!

1944 Lee Enfield Long Branch No. 4 MkI*/3(F) that was sporterized. I got a great deal on it and love to shoot it. Always get questions about it too. That being said, I'm debating if I want to have it drilled and tapped for a scope before deer season, or buy a Remington 700 for deer duty.

This is Dad's deergetter. He bought it in 1962 from KMart-his dad bought these by the case and gave them away as gifts.
It is a 1943 Lithgow SMLE No 1 Mk III.

unnamed.jpg

It was sported by some ol'timey smith around the San Angelo, TX area. It appears he sanded the hell out of the stock, and put some stain on it. Dad says he broke the bottle of stain, cut himself badly on the glass, and bled on the gun. Not sure what to think about that.

It can be put back in its military clothes if I wish-new forward wood and metal bits. The barrel/sight weren't touched.

Thanks! It is out of commission for the moment, as the foreend is split at the draws. Oil-soaked wood.

But it's a good shooter in really pretty nice shape.

How about some Scout-erized Army surplus? This is my FR-8 Spanish Mauser in 7.62x51. Fajen stock, XS Scout mount, Timney Sportsman trigger, chopped front sight frame, 200m aperture drilled out to a ghost ring, Aimpoint PRO co-witnessed with the irons.

Very cool FR-8. I like the Aimpoint Pro optic as well. Are you able to get 100% co-witness with that optic and the irons? If so, there may be an Aimpoint Pro in my future....

Here's my FR-8, back in its Hogue synthetic stock, with the 200m rear aperture drilled to 7/64" per Henschman's idea, and a newly installed Timney trigger pirated from another '98 Mauser project. Looking forward to a weekend range trip with this one!

I love sporterized military rifles. All of mine were bought altered and they all pretty much fall into the 'bubba-ized' catagory rather than works of art. That is actually the way I like them because it keeps the price low and allows me to use the heck out of them with little regard to their appearance.
The first pic shows 2 03s and a P17. The first 03 was set up as a target rifle for a small person. I had to put in a spacer to lengthen the LOP so I could shoot it. Loves cast bullets. Second 03 now wears a 6X Leupold and I made my longest shot on a deer last season with it....325 yards.

This is a Swede that has one of the nicest reworked military stocks on it I've seen.

Finally, a Krag that has a crude buck's head carved in the buttstock. There is a date stamped by the carving from the 30s. I would love to know the history of this rifle.

I've got a krag done by G and H and an enfield done by WR I'll defiantly have to get picks up when I get off the rig.
Great Thread!

there is the Enfield in question in the back row :) Sorry didn't take a solo pic. Came to me pre sporterized for better or worse doesn't matter it is mine now and I am looking forward to using it.

It's not an "absolute co-witness," with the sights lined up right in the center of the FOV, if that's what you mean... it is a lower co-witness. Like lower than 1/3. Lower 1/6 maybe. It matters not at all with a parallax-free optic like the Aimpoint.

This is what I got for the wife & kids to use for deer & elk.

It's a sporterized 1895 Chilean mauser in 7x57. I traded a Rossi matched pair 12ga/22mg for it. I definitely got the better end of the deal.
it had a 27" barrel when i got it, but I had that cut down to 22" & the stock shortened to fit my wife better.
as far as I can tell, it still has the original barrel, & shoots like a dream. the trigger is a bit heavy, but the 2 stage system makes it fairly easy to be accurate with. I get about .8" 3 shot groups at 100, & I just started loading some 162 gr hornady A-max bullets that I'm hoping will cut that to about .6"...
I am more accurate with it than I am with my 700 30-06.
