I'm thinking about buying an older hunting rifle.... or a replica. Not sure what exactly I'm looking for yet. I've got a Winchester 94. I'd kinda like something with a scope and in .30-06, but not entirely stuck on that. I was looking at both Winchester 70s and Remington 700 BDLs, but maybe something else... plus a pre 64 Winchester is a little outside my price range at the moment. I'm kinda thinking early 20th century.....

Ideas?

Edit: A Savage 99 is on my short list.

Keep your eyes out for sporterized Springfields and P-14's. many a custom was built on them, and in doing so their collector value has been lost.

There's often a 'full custom' (read that as a fancy stock that doesn't fit anoyone but the original owner) that can be had at a bargain price that you can then convert or modify again to your own needs.

The other day I saw a really sweet sporterized 30-40 Krag for sale from a private party.. Not bubba'd at all. Somebody back in the 60s did it right. Had an old Lyman Alaskan scope and a cool, worn leather sling. $275. If I didn't already have a 30-40 I would have jumped on it.
I love the old rifles. One of the local shops has a '95 Winchester lever in 30-06. Great gun, but at almost $900 a little out of my price range.
I'm still looking for that 'perfect for me' 99 Savage in .300 Sav.
Good luck and have fun.

George

That Krag sounds sweet. I love how they action on them feel. I'd love a 1895, but like you, the price is a bit steep at the moment. I'd feel like a jerk sticking a scope on one though.

i agree on the sporterized '03. for early 20th century, that's about as period-correct of a hunting rifle you can get. they were cheap, plentiful, and a lot of folks were feeding their families with them.

Here's my 1903 sporter:

How about a Remington 30?

Or, if you want to go REAL nostalgic -- a Model 8? (Not .30-'06, but the .35 Rem. is a fine round.)

CPE, that's a nice rifle. How period correct is it though?

Good suggestions Sam. I'd like to stick to .30-06, but it doesn't mean I have too.

I prefer my Mausers, i have a Kar98k in 8mm Mauser and a model 93 Spanish Mauser in 7x57. Both shoot great and are awesome for deer, though i prefer my Kar98k, it just cycles so much better than any other bolt i've ever shot

There is nothing period correct if you are referring to what it once was....a surplus military rifle....I though you wanted an old school sporter. My gun is a custom built from a 1903 sniper rifle some 50 years ago. The touches done to it were common back then.

Mannlicher-Schoenauer sporter in 6.5 MS

Any of the classic double rifles, of course

One of the nicely sporterized 1888 Commission Mausers. I've seen some gorgeous ones with intricate carvings on them.

Commercial Mauser sporter.

Or how about this Savage in .250-3000, carried by the real life Indiana Jones:

To me nothing screams "Old School" like the Savage 99. I have a friend that has one in .308. He inherited it. Just "another gun" for him to sit in the corner.

I want it, but if it was a .300 Savage or particularly a .250-3000, I'd kill to get it. Almost unused condition.

Well, I'm thinking that's it wasn't entirely uncommon and would be period correct 50 years ago. I just wasn't sure as pretty as it is, I thought it was a new rifle built out of an old one!

What is the scope on it?

My short list of older rifles that I would like to have is:

1895 in .30-40 ($2500 and up around here)
Model 99 in 250-3000 (over $750 for a good one)
Savage Model 340 .30-30 (A neighbor friend of mine had one and it was the first bolt action I ever shot.)

Of these the best one is probably the Savage 99.

I would love to own a later model Remington 760 Game Master Carbine in 35 Rem., the one with the 18.5" barrel. Drool, drool, drool, drool.

No, it is not a newly built rifle. It was likely built in the 60's. The action is from 1943. It still wears it's factory barrel and was just cut down, recrowned, and turned down. The scope is a Weaver K10. I put it on to use for groundhogs this summer. I have a vintage K6 to put on for deer hunting.

Remington did their own version of the P14/P17 conversions with the Model 30.

Lot of gunsmith sporterized the P14s, P17s, and M1903s after both WWI and WWII. Some of them are outstanding, and still available. Mausers were also reworked into beautiful rifles and some of the continental makers turned out beautiful sporter M98s.

Also, don't neglet a Remington 721 or 725 if you are looking for a 30-06.

I have a Winchester M1895 that I had reworked to 405 WCF and enjoy hunting with it.

Here's my sporterized German Mauser (I've since put a scope on it).

Classic old-school conversion. I'm guessing it was modified in the 1950s or 1960s. It's got the original military barrel and still shoots 1" groups with PRVI Partisan soft points. I got it for $250 about a year ago. I always love classics. It's not necessarily the best-looking gun, but it's a great shooter and something I don't have to worry about taking into the brush.
