Letter to COP about C&R

I don't remember sending anyone a letter. Its been a while since I applied for a C&R, but I thought all you did was send a copy of the application to the LEO, or let the ATF send it.

When I did mine, I just shoved it in an envelope, wrote his name of the front and dropped it off at the station. Probably not the most tactful idea, but nothing came of it. If I did it again, I'd attach a note letting him know it was informational purposes only.

I just mailed him a copy of my C+R license.
No letter,no nothing,just a copy of the license.
I live a pretty anti city so I didn't care if he
likes it or not.
Never heard a word from him or the PD.

Why would you send him a copy of your license when you are supposed to send the second copy of the application?

I mailed a copy of the app to my sheriff with a yellow post-it that said "For your records" and yellow highlight on the line that states where I must send him a copy.

I just mailed them the form I was required to, no letter attached. I sent it return receipt request so I would have the signature of who received it just so I could prove I sent it and it was received.
The instructions for your local law enforcement are on the form, if you want, maybe attach one of those post-its or colorful tags next to the part on the form that is applicable to them.

I sent a copy of the C&R application to my local sheriff. A couple of weeks later, I got the application back in the mail, along with a letter telling me to come down to the station with money to pay for a background check.
Because I fulfilled my obligations under the terms of the C&R application (mail a copy of the application to local law enforcement for notification purposes only), I simply filed the sheriff's letter and the copy of the C&R application with the rest of my paperwork and have ignored it since. My 03 FFL arrived in the mail shortly after.

The instructions clearly state you must provide a copy of the application to your CLEO. I used the text from here http://www.cruffler.com/becomingcruffler.html
My application went through with no problem.

Just send it to his/ her prefered mailing address. No further explanation is needed or required---expect that he/she is professional enough to handle his end if need be. No song and dance. The CLEO doesn't get to pass go or collect $200.00 or anything else. He or she can inform ATF if they have a problem with your ap, and you'll find out in turn. Send it registered mail if you're worried so you get a receipt.

As a paralegal I write anywhere between five to fifteen letters to Court Clerks, Judges and other .gov types everyday. The key thing to remember in such a letter is that you want to tell the person reading it exactly what it is about, and exactly what to do with it.
Assume that they will have four-million other letters and file to read, and want to spend as little time on each of them as possible. You need to be polite, but you shoudl avoid being flowery.
Jorg's letter is just about perfect, but I'd make a few slight changes:
It is a very little thing, but adding a "Re:" line (I recommend doing it in bold) lets the Cheif toss it into the approproate stack of files with only a quick glance. Likewise, in the main paragraph I say what in enclosed and what to do with the enclosurue before telling him why it is enclosed or why he's doing it.
The Chief of Police isn't goign to be the one opennign his mail, or processing the paperwork. Some clerk is goign to do it, and that clerk just wants to do it quick so he can go home at 5:00.

something very matter of fact. being MA i will also mention in the letter that i hold appropriate state licenses to recieve said C&R's and am aware of restrictions, essentialy ban on C&R pistols. seem good, or too much info?

I just sent a letter that basically said "No action is required on your part, this is only notification as required by law." along with the CLEO copy of the C&R application.
As for too much info, from what I've heard about MA police, there's no such thing as too much put into CYA!

My application packet supplied the necessary forms to send to the CLEO, which was basically just a duplicate of the application I sent to the feds

The most recent C&R FFL application contains a copy for the ATF and a copy for your CLEO, and complete instructions. The old days of notifying the CLEO by letter are gone. Of course you can include a polite letter if you want, but it is superfluous.

I included a brief letter with the extra copy of my application. It didn't cost any more to mail, and I'm sure it didn't hurt anything to introduce myself a little bit.

I just included a brief letter telling him that this was required according to federal regulations "for notification purposes." I also said (I think, don't remember) that he can contact me if he has any questions. Either way, so long as it gets there, he's been notified.
I remember hearing from somebody once that his local CLEO sent a letter back asking for information, and our advice was to just keep that letter as proof he was notified and not to say anything more. If the CLEO knows you aren't law abiding, the burden is on him to notify the ATF. I think most of the agencies just round file that stuff; it isn't a big deal.

My application had a part marked for Local LEO, Filled that out, put it in an envelope with the Chiefs name, went to the station, talked to the guy in dispatch who got the chief, handed him the envelope stating it was the required portion for a Curo and Relic application and that was that.
