So I just spoke with my town Police Station about the application process for a class A gun license. He said that the chief of police will only issue Class A licenses to individuals after they have held a class B license for a minimum of 6 years. The only way to get around this is to submit a letter with my application stating the reasons I should have a class A license. Has anyone hear of this?

As I don't have work related reasons to hold a class A license, do you guys/gals have any suggestions about what I should put in the letter?

Thanks.

It would help to know where you live

I assume it's MA. What town? If so we've got plenty of lawyers who can advise.
Bottom line is that if you are in MA the chief can do whatever he wants, however he wants. There is no recourse

HUH????

Jls 944-Not to be blunt, but wotinell is a "Class A license?" or a "Class B license?" What are you trying to become licensed to do? Where are you located?

In my neck of the woods, a Class A license is for a bar that serves beer AND liquor. A Class B license is for a beer-only bar. If one of those is your intent, you are on the wrong forum.

Sounds like you have a local, or mebbe a state, issue here. If we knew where you are, someone here might have a clue as to how to help you.

At any rate, good luck; hope yr police chief looks kindly on your application. :) Whatever you are trying to do, it's a crying shame that you have to ask The Man's permission first!

If it's MA you are at the mercy of the local chief as far as criteria for getting an LTC. Some won't issue at all.

You can call a lawyer and get them involved but it may not help you at all. What town are you in?

Here is a thread about lawyers in MA specializing in firearms law.

And here is a thread with some insight into specific towns and how easy to impossible it is to get an LTC Class A ALP. For the muggles that would be License To Carry Firearms - Class A(large capacity) - All Lawful Purposes

Massachusetts allows the chiefs to restrict people's licences to carry. You can actually get a licence to carry in MA that doesn't allow you to carry.

That's brutal. Especially since the town I just moved from is much more lenient on class A issuance.

I live in Methuen, MA

How low has it sunk??!!

Aah, Massachusetts! Both sides of my family are from there. (Emphasis on "from!") My namesake was murdered on Bunker Hill.

The cradle of the armed revolution that began our great nation!

Ask a police chief if you can please carry a firearm--the very idea!

How can ye have sunk so low? The Minutemen of Lexington and Concord must be retching in their graves!

For non resident permits, since they are issued by the State Police and not a local yokel, do they just issue class A? Anyone have any feedback on this?
