What can y’all tell me about this scope?
What would be a good price for one?

Is it a good scope for shooting at the bench to say 100 to 200 yards?

.223 caliber
Savage

model 12

It will work great for group shooting at 100/200 yards. I have one on a rifle and another used one in the safe. I also have a slightly used Weaver 36X in the box.

Yes.

Have you used high power scopes before? It shows mirage more, and can even get hard to use in bad mirage, but was the scope of choice for a very long time in 100/200 yard Benchrest matches. A fixed 36X is still popular.

no I haven’t but I feel this is a good time to learn and being a leupold that lifetime warranty is worth the money to me

My 36X Leupold in a mirage, makes it a lot harder to shoot small groups. Buy a variable. The price is good. Most ask $500.

I only shoot when conditions are in my favor. Overcast or even light rain.

It takes practice, but I have shot small groups in mirage so bad the liens on the target were gone and all you could see was a black blob from the thick black square on the target, which is what it is there for, you can still see it when mirage blurs out the thin lines.

A sample of what the targets look like.

Use a heat shield over the barrel when using a high power scope. Heat coming off the barrel adds to the mirage.

I made one of heavy paper. Glued on 2 paper rings that slip over the barrel. Works ok, except 1 time it moved a little to far forward. Muzzle blast trimmed it shorter.:D

does it look ok to y’all? what is the deal with the bolt that comes out at a 45 degree angle?

@Walkalong any thoughts?

My only complaint in the 36x40 is the exit pupil. You won’t notice it as much since you can’t “zoom into darkness,” but a 1.1mm exit pupil is pretty rough for my eyes - inherently dark. Otherwise, the mirage is a concern which is hard to ignore for me. BUT in the context of midday, good lighting, mild weather (aka, those great days you really like to be out shooting), the 36x competition scope is a great value.

Any idea on the post nub thingy? I’m not sure what it’s for?

This. I can recall times we’d shoot and had a spotter tell us where we hit in proximity to the blob....and then shoot as fast as we could before the conditions changed. The lesson i learned was ..... read the damn flags.....scopes are good to get on paper, but learn to read the flags!

Thank you any info on the post nub thing?

Could it be some sort of modification to lock the adjustment in place? That’s what it looks like to me. It doesn’t look like a factory-type mod, but like something someone did. I know many of the earlier 36's had a reputation for becoming quite erratic unless you sent them to Cecil Tucker who made a very nice modification (Tucker Conversion) by placing a decent coil spring against the erector tube to hold it against the turret adjustent as the internal leaf type springs became quite weak over time. Your mod doesn’t look like what I recall a Tucker mod looked like, but that comes to mind.

Yup - it’s an older version of the Tucker Conversion. That style is a tube with a small internal spring which keeps pressure between the erector tube and the adjustment spindles. Later versions had a screw in the end which bottomed on the erector tube, locking firm the adjustments. The latter had to be loosened for adjustments, then tightened back after. The spring loaded early version operated as normal. The idea being they simply offer less lash in adjustment.

Update so I bought this scope and I am trying to figure out if it’s missing parts any help guys I am mainly asking about the turrets
