I was looking at gander for rings to fit my weaver bases and they are only $20-25 they looked just like weaver rings but are they crappy rings?

I want to mount a 4-12-44 onto a savage 223. I had Burris steel rings on the other one but they wont fit the bases on the 223 I'm mounting the scope on.

just want decent rings that will give me decent accuracy.

There are more expensive, more modern rings out there, but Leupold rings (IMO) are quality made. My main experience with Leupold rings have been with the standard and dual dovetails, but I do have one rifle with the weaver style Leupold's and they hold just fine.

I have a few sets of Leupold rings and larger centerfire rifles (300 win mag, 30.06, 300 RUM) and have never had a problem. You will be good to go with Leupold.

I'd strongly advise against anything with dovetails. They are an old design meant to correct improperly drilled mounting holes in the rifles receiver. Seventy to 80 years ago they were needed. I've not seen a rifle that needed them made since the 1950's, but some still use them simply because that is what they saw grandpa use. He may have needed them, there are much better options today.

Weaver or weaver style mounts work as well as anything, the rings just don't look as good. With Weaver style bases the Burris Zee rings are an excellent choice that looks nice and won't break the bank. The aluminum Leupold rings that fit Weaver bases seem OK. But I don't think they are the best option.

I cant get a weaver base off the rifle and my burris rings wont fit the weaver base so Im kinda stuck with the dovetail rings.

Because there is no spec for "weaver" bases and rings its common to not have fitments in older manufactured bases or rings. new manufactured weaver style bases and rings adhere to larger recoil notches in the base and smaller recoil lugs on the rings...most of the time.

There's nothing wrong with dovetail rings per se, unless you run out of adjustment. If your setup is fine on that regard, its a classic look and very sleek, and strong. Leupold dovetail rings are some of the best still out there.

Can't get the base off?
Is it welded on?

If not, heat those screw heads up with a soldering iron then back em out.

Screws stripped out so instead of fooling with trying to get them out I was just going to change rings.

Got z rings on another weaver base and they fit fine these bases don't fit.

Are you saying the Zee rings you have will not fit the Weaver bases with the stripped out screws? If you spread them a hair with a screwdriver would they?

That said, these Leupold rings are good quality for cheap rings. Are they what you were asking about?

Or these, or these? The Cross-Slot Weaver-Style rings are nice, but the Zee rings are just as nice, and cheaper.

'Weaver' is not 'dovetail.' 2 different things.
The Zee rings should fit the Weaver-style bases. Sometimes they're difficult.
The cheap aluminum Leupold Weaver-style rings are the 'Rifleman' line. They're a good, clean design, and should work just fine on a 223.
Check out the Weaver Grand Slam top mount rings. Steel, made in USA, redesigned a year or 2 ago.

jmr40, the Leupold dual dovetail rings and bases are anything but what you said. The following is Leupold's description and they are my favorite mounting system: "Leupold's steel Dual Dovetail bases and rings are one of our strongest mounting systems designed for large caliber rifles with high recoils. The twist-and-lock action of the rings ensures a strong connection with the one or two piece base." It's common for people to have their own preferences in mounting systems but it's also common for people to make comments on products they have never used.

I really like the Leupold QRS and QRW rings. Plus if you ever lose or damage your mounting hardware you can call them and get an American on the phone who will ship you replacement parts at no cost.

The new Weaver rings are very good, in fact I would just as soon have them as the Burris or Leupolds. There wasn't anything wrong with the old two screw Weavers, just a pain to get the crosshairs straight with screws only on one side. Any of the Weavers, old or new, return to zero every time for me.

to me it appears the weaver bases on the rifle are larger therefore wont let it fit. even if the rings get bent out a bit they still wont fit.

Have to say, I'm not the biggest fan of the rifleman rings. Its best to throw a few more dollars into the rings as they are so important in the mounting process.

I'm also not quite sure what you are after now. You had mentioned dovetail, which had a few of us thinking Leupold Dual dovetail. There are also 3/8" dovetail rails, both integral and mountable. Then weaver style 7/8" rails. A picture may help clarify things as well. If you need a 7/8" weaver style ring set, the Burris Zee is a fine choice. I personally go with the Leupold PRW rings.
