I need scope mounts for a Tikka T3X and I bought a new VX5HD. Does anyone know if there is a difference in mounted height between the 30mm dual dovetails with low rings and the backcountry medium one piece rings? I would like the lowest setup possible.

One thing that can make a difference is the base height.I doubt if the low dovetail rings will be high enough to keep the scope bell off the barrel.I just put a VX5HD 4X20 on a M700,and I used a Mark 4 20 MOA rail for a base with medium Mark 4 rings, and it was about right, maybe 1/4 inch off the barrel. If you use a Pic rail rather than a Weaver style base, most of the time the rail is about 1/4 inch thicker which will raise the scope a bit.For the dovetail style,I'd bet you'll need to go to medium rings at least.

What size objective? 42, 44, 52, 56?

This is a good question, though, because I'm looking at the same scope (2-10x42) for a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight; having not mounted a scope on a hunting rifle in 30 years, I'm sorting through all the options myself.

Again, it depends on the objective size, as well as the barrel contour. A slim tapered sporter barrel might just thin down enough to clear the objective with a lower ring. So no one manufacturer will give you a clear answer (although I find the Talley web site is the most helpful). Rule of thumb is 50mm bell needs a medium height ring. If possible, of course, order low and medium and see what you can get away with and return or stockpile the extra rings.

BTW love the VX5-HD I have a 3-15x44 with low rings but it's sitting up on a pic rail with a Rem 700 pattern (Bergara receiver). The dual-dovetails should give you a really nice clean look.

Leupold web site has a ring app if that helps...I use leupold rings and mounts usually so it works...

I actually went a completely different route and bought the Burris T3 steel rings which mount directly onto the factory Tikka dovetail. They work great. I just wish they were about 1/8" lower. They MUST be lapped. 20201130_164909.jpg

Be advised that supposedly the same ring heights vary significantly between manufacturers. That is, one company’s medium may be a high from another company. The only way you know is to either go to a shop that has them in stock and try them or call the manufacturer. They can usually do the calculations for you.
