Hey all. I am about to put a Leupold FXII 4x33 scope on my M70. I am thinking about going with a Leupold Dual Dovetail mount and rings for a clean simple look. Don't know if I can go with the Super Lows rings or not? If I do, would it be an advantage. Give me your thoughts and opinions. I would most likely order all the parts. Thanks in advance.

I highly recommend you take it to a gun store and try some rings out. You may find that the lowest ring you can fit is too low for your cheekweld. Ring heights differ from one maker to another also, so that complicates things also. They may be a bit more expensive at a gun store, but it may also save you having to make a return and reordering. Plus, you don't have to wait for shipping.

Super-low rings might work on a Pre-64 Model 70, as the stocks back then had a low comb.

Later rifles were stocked with bigger scopes in mind, and will likely require medium rings to get your head down low enough to see through it.

I'd say a general rough rule of thumb is:
If the rifle has open sights on the barrel, use low rings.
If the barrel is devoid of sights, use medium rings.

Leupold has a mount fit application on their web site that tells you what rings/bases will work on a rifle.

The 'low' rings will work. I have not mounted any super-low on a M70.

But, doing the math, the 'super-low' rings will work, only IF you have a M-70 with the standard sporter or featherweight barrel, not the African or varmint barreled models.

i like my scope as low as possible...giving me as close to the feeling of an iron sight cheek weld as possible...thus my scope is about 3mm above the barrel on my m77

I wouldn't go any lower than low (not super-low, lol). Your neck can thank me later. Wow, that sounded strange......

3 70-types rifles here all with leupold glass. one 70 featherweight and 2 montana m99's. I have leupold low rings with burris bases on one, weaver/talley extra low on one, and some weaver bases patiently waiting the return of a 3-9x33 in talley extra low qd's. I also like my scopes low as possible.

The Leupold low rings come out at exactly the same height as the extra low talley's, but the talleys are weaver bases as well.

If i did it again, i'd get the Talley one-piece extra low for the x33 bell. It'll fit fine on the sporter barrel contour.
