Winchester 70 - will low rings work?

On the Winchester 70 Sporter in 30-06, will the Leupold low rings work with the dual dovetail mounts? My scope will be a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x40.

I should get the "gloss" finish on the scope to match the Sporter finish, right?

*I called my gunsmith and Winchester and got a "it will be close" from both of them. I want to buy the right rings and want the scope to sit as low as possible.

P.S. If there is a reason I should consider Medium rings, feel free to say why.

Usually a 40mm scope requires medium rings to keep the front bell from touching anything. You might be able to get away with low rings depending on how tall the bases are and your barrel contour, but if it works it will be too close to call from here. You'll just have to try it and see.

Id probobly go with meds if your ordering from a catalog, and if you cant actualy try rings at your local shop. You might try contacting Leapold, they maybe able to say right off the bat.

The low rings will work just fine with a 40mm objective scope and a sporter-weight barrel.

I've never used anything but low rings with scopes up to 40mm. But some scopes, rings and receivers are a bit different. It is possible you MAY have to use mediums with some brands of rings where lows will work fine with most others. I believe in mounting the scope as low as possible, so I'd try lows first.

the best way to do it is to take it to a gun shop. The shop wants to make a sale, and it is only fair that they try different types of rings to find what works best with your gun/scope combination. If they refuse to try more than one size/brand of ring, I recommend politely telling them that you will take your business elsewhere. It is more of a hassle to order online, unless you don't mind sending stuff back and forth through the mail.

Low should fit, but as others said, it is best to try before you buy. I assume that the gloss finish may be the trouble...I would ask the retailer if you can try the matte ones for fit and have him order the gloss ones for you.

IMO it looks better than matte, especially with a gloss scope, but to each their own.
