Has anyone used one of these scopes for a Deer gun?

http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-vx-i-1-4x20mm-shotgun-rifle-scope.html

It would be going on an 870 with a rifled barrel. The barrel is not a cantilever so I am thinking I will have the receiver tapped for a single base.

I'm also looking for some input on rings. I've always used Talley lightweights for rifles but have never messed with a shotgun yet. Any suggestions?

I have a fixed 2X on my Shotgun setup. But I think your choice is a good one, and you cant beat Leupolds warranty. I'd say go with it. I have Leupold rings on mine but I see nothing wrong with Talleys. I have a set of the one piece rings and mounts on a 45/70 and they work just fine. Tapping the reciever is the way to go if you don't have a cantilever barrel on a dedicated Deer gun.

Have one

I have one on a bolt action slug gun and have killed a number of deer with it, nothing past 100 yards. It's a good scope and excellent optics. The only fault I have with it (and any of these small scopes with 20mm objectives) is the limited light gathering in early morning and late evening and that's normally when you most need it for deer hunting. I think if I replaced it I would go with a 40mm objective lens.

I had one and didn't care for the quality of the optics. It was sold off and will be replaced with a VX2 1x-4x.

What changed to make it the VX-II as opposed to the VX-1?

I agree on the Leupold warranty. Considering the warranty and the quality, it's almost always worth the money.

Ok... I answered my own question. From Leupold's website:

VX-II

The VX-II line (2003 and older) uses a combination of Vari-X III and Vari-X II (discontinued) technology. VX-II’s also utilize ¼-MOA click adjustments, but the lens coatings are unique. The external lenses are coated with Multicoat 4 and the internal lenses are coated with magnesium fluoride.
Beginning in 2004, the VX-II line is fully multicoated and will perform comparably to the discontinued Vari-X III line.

The VX-I also utilizes a combination of Vari-X III and Vari-X II technology, utilizing ¼-MOA friction (non-clicking) adjustments. The external lenses are multicoated and the internal lenses use magnesium fluoride.

I use the VXI 1X4 on both of my AR15s. It works very well for close in work all the way out to 300 yards. I would not hesitate to use it on a heavy rifle or slug gun.

Well I have enough affirmation to feel good about spending a couple of hundred bucks on this project.

I am not really a fan of the saddle mount so I will probably tap the receiver. The mount is permanent then but you could still take the optic off and use rifle sights.

I'll see what Talley has. They've never let me down before.
