I'd like some opinions on the following scope setup for my AK-74:

BP-02 AK Side to Weaver Mount:

Burris Signature Zee (Weaver-style) Scope Rings:

My only other question is...

The Burris rings come in two heights only- medium and high. Does anyone know if the medium height will put the scope too high?

High enough will mean you don't have to remove the rear sight leaf; other than that, pray that your scope will have enough increment adjustments for the distance you're shooting at (I ran into that problem on my Saiga :banghead: , because the scope wouldn't zero down enough). Also, the side mount sits the scope high in general--just to warn you. Other than that, sounds like a fun setup. If you get bored of that, I'd suggest looking at Tantal's stuff. Good luck.

I don't think medium rings would be a problem...
I have a BP-02 with a BSA 4x32 with medium rings and it sits quite low, I don't think it could get any lower but the BSA is a larger scope then the one you show.

Just ordered my bp02A from Tantal and have a Bushnell Trophey 1.75-4x32. I am going to see if low mounts will work, from Tantal's site, it sounds like they will.

I actually ordered a BP-02a last week (still waiting on delivery). I would have shown a pic of the BP-02a, but Tantal doesn't have one.

The medium rings should work for the set up you are looking at. I have never liked the side mount myself, never found one that held stable for accurate shooting. I went to the Ultimak mount and holosight. The Ultimak mount is very stable but it is a forward scout type mount and would require something with long eye relief.

I have the BP-02 on my WASR I got from Tantal. It is the low profile model, and does sit quite low, which I like. This precludes you from using the iron sights, unless you take the mount/scope off, but I like it. The gun handles much better that way in my opinion. I've got a cheap NEC scope, a 4x32, and clearance is not an issue. I think the setup you're contemplating would be great, that Leopold would have plenty of clearance with the low profile mount. I'm not familiar with the Burris rings, so I don't know how high the medium ones would sit..

The eye relief on the Leupold VX-I 1-4x20mm is 4.3in(1x) - 3.8in(4x). I'm anticipating not having any problems with eye relief (crosses his fingers :) ).

Your side rail set up works great with med rings as you do not want to hang a big axx scope on it - keep to the compact types perhapes even a red dot. Millet makes a nice series of red dots.

Still waiting, eh? Me too--and I sent my money to Tantal about 3 weeks ago (they got the money monday, "shipped" it as well). The wait's killing me! But, I got a PSO optic :neener: , so that should work by default. Other than waiting, Tantal is the place to look for most anything AK-wise, even that mount (I think, I don't know if they have it  ).

I got the Tantal BP-02a mount last night! :neener:

It fits like a champ. All I need now is the scope rings.

I'm seriously considering the Warne QD rings as well:

Why use QD rings when the whole mount's a QD unit in itself?
The plan would be to swap out the Leupold(w/rings) for a Red Dot setup while still using the Weaver mount. Otherwise, I would have gone with a dedicated side-mount Red dot/scope like a Kobra or POSP respectively.

Got mine today! I got Leupold aluminum medium mounts; low may have cleared it, but it would be close.
I sighted it in at 25 yards, had to come wayyy up from the bottom of the page, but it was right on left to right. I would have sighted it in further at 100, but after 20 shots, I noticed the weaver rail was loose! Not the mount on the side and not the rings, but the rail attached to the mount. I had to call it quits b/c it was moving around and I had no scredriver or locktite with me. I have since removed the rail and used red loctite on the two screws holding it in place, that better work. Maybe we'll see Saturday.

AK accuracy?

I'd say mine is decent. The red loctite did the job, nothing loosend and the scope maintined its zero after removing the side mount and remounting.

Digex, I'd say that if you want a red-dot setup as an alternative to your scope, why not just buy another scope mount? That way, you slide one off and slide the other one on. No need to muck about with detachable scope rings - in fact, the lower cost of standard rings for both mounts will probably be enough savings to buy the second mount anyway.

Here's the scope setup I ended up with on my AK-74:

Hmmm, my BP02 is well left of center on my Saiga - as a consequence, no regular rings would work (Warne, Burris...) - not enough scope clicks to get on target. I was forced to use Millett angle-locs to adjust for windage. Now I'm curious as to whether .223/7.62x39/5.45x39 AKs are narrower than my Saiga .308 which makes the BP02 rail dead center instead of too far left? Can you guys who have one tell me that please?

If the Burris DO work, then I'd get the non-signature Burris Zees instead - they are availabe in low (for $21 at www.theopticzone.com ).

For the VEPR owners, is the Tantal mount what you have used? Tapco and others have similar mounts.

I was thinking of trying to get a mount and a 4X or 6X scope to play with. I figured I could always swap it for the EOTech on my AR flat top.

I also noticed KVAR was out of the plastic Bulgarian mags in 7.62. Dang it. I guess I will have to buy another set of used steel mags.

I used the BP-02 low mount on my VEPR K and it works perfectly. Just barely clears the rear sight and good eye relief.

Thanks for the pic. I think that is what I will go for.

I hadn't planned to get a drum mag, but we'll see. :)
