lever 30-30 loads with spitzer slugs?

haveing seen the caveats against this I'm wondering if the use of the hard primers such as CCI 34 (IIRC) meant for semi-autos with floating fireing pins would be safe to use in rifles with tube magazines?
Hornady has come out with the 'jelly-tip' of course but loading some 130 gr spitzers seems appealing.
anyone ever try this? I haven't seen any info that says it would not be safe.

Don't do it with conventional spitzers unless you intend to load them single shot!!

Any primer that the firing pin can set off could also be set off in a tubular magazine. There might be a slight possibility of doing it and getting away with it using very light loads, but it only has to set one off in the mag once to ruin the gun and maybe yourself. Best to avoid that.

That said, I used to have a 30-30 lever and also a contender in 30-30. I loaded lots of pointed bullets for the contender and tried some single loaded in the lever. Once loaded you either had to fire it to extract it or pop off the extractor from the rim to get it out. Depending on the bullet & OAL it might not even cycle. If the OAL is short enough to cycle, you will have one in the chamber and one in the tube. It just isn't safe any other way.

With that said. I have played with Sierra's 150 grain Pro-Hunter #2130. I loaded them to the same specs as you would use with the 150 grain FN Pro-Hunter #2000.

I used W-748, Winchester cases and CCI 200 primers. Fired from a 60 year old Winchester M94.

I found little improvment over the FN. In fact accuracy was not as good. Velocity only improved by 50 fpc.

As far as the Hornady Leverution bullets are concerned. They are very much over rated by Hornady and don't make a .30-30 a longer range rifle anymore then it originally was or is. Still a 100 to 150 yard rifle...
