Last night I listened to two guys "discuss" .357 vs 30/30. Incredibly (to me) one guy said that the 30/30 had no more recoil or muzzle blast or noise than a .357! It seems to me that the 30/30's I've fired would have more recoil plus blast and noise. However, I haven't fired a .357 rifle (yet) so I thought I'd post and ask the guys who have fired both loads.

Thanks,
KR

My .357 w/20" barrell has literally no kick or noise. It is much quieter than my 6" barrelled .357 pistol. Comparable to .22lr in noise and kick. (as least that's how I remember it).

That guy is nutz....

I have a rfle in each of thos calibers, and with factory ammo their difference is definately there. They are both very managable...the thutty thutty being twice the weight is still not a bruiser.
My cast loads for the 30 are very mild ,and at that point the two rifles are similair, but not factory vs. factory loads.

I own a Marlin 1894CP. The one with the 16inch ported barrel.
On a few occasions I have had fellow shooters at the range ask me if I'm shooting 30-30 when using the 1894CP.

Is that a .357?

Happens every few times I take my Winchester 94 Trapper to the local indoor range (25 yard max, handgun rounds only).

Almost like a rehearsed play-

"Hey, you can't shoot that thing in here, it's a 30-30!!!"

'No it isn't'

"Really!?! Gotta be a .44 then..."

'Nope. .357 Mag'

"No way a little .357 is that loud, lemme see..."

Thing is, a 30-30 is louder and heavier. But I guess being indoors gives it that boom that makes people think otherwise.

I don't get it...unless all that racket was coming out the ports and hitting the guy next to you in the ear

Either that or they think the 1894CP is too small to be a .40 cal rifle...?

Deadman...

".40 caliber rifle..."?? Did Marlin make CP's in .40 at some time?
Hey! I received the new 2003 Marlin catalog yesterday! Nice picture on the front. If I saw a Grisly coming at me with that HUGE mouth open (like the one on the front of the new catalog), I'd throw my rifle down, scream like a little girl, and run for the tallest tree I could find. (Or learn to fly~*Without the plane!) Lordy! That is one BIG mouth!

I own a Marlin in 357 the standard non-ported barrel. My brother owns a Winchester 30-30.

The Winnie definitely thumps harder and barks louder than the Marlin. Since the weights are pretty close, that's not much of a factor. IMNSHO, the Marlin is almost a pipsqueak compared to the Winnie. Not that either is bad or punishing, there's just a noticeable difference

I've never considered the 30-30 to have much recoil. Noticable, but far from punishing. Having said that, normal factory 44 Magnum ammo in lever guns have about as much recoil as factory 30-30s.

Comparing the 357 to the 30-30 is just plain silly. A 357 is about like a 223 or a heavy barrel 243... you know it was fired but darn near anyone should be able to shoot until their trigger finger was sore. :p

Yep guy was wrong.

Have had both. Never much cared for lever guns really.
But that .357 is just too fun to shoot. Don't have the 30-30
anymore.

30/30 is pretty tame. .357 is a real pussycat. Pretty
loud, but quieter than the 30/30. Felt to me maybe about
half the recoil When you plug the numbers into
a recoil calculator that is about what you get too.

150 gr. 30/30 at 2300 fps. near 10 ft/lbs.

145 gr. 357 at 1900 fps near 4 ft/lbs. Verified with a chronograph
and factory silvertips from Winchester.

Personally I find anything at 5 ft/lbs and less low enough
to shoot indefinitely. Above that certainly 10 ft/lbs or
higher might not seem like too much. But within a few
dozen rounds you will notice quite a difference.

check out this page, good online recoil calculator. And others
too. One surprising difference is the 30/30 using around
30 grains of powder while the 357 gets by with only 6 or
so. And that extra powder leaving the barrel adds to the
recoil a fair bit.

BTW, a .223 55 gr. bullet in the same weight rifle has about
the same recoil as the 357 mag in a Marlin lever gun.

esidude...

I either never noticed, can't remember, or just got so used to my M16 and then AR15 that I never notice any recoil now when I shoot. The .357 will be like THAT?? Well, THAT'S nothing at all.
