Since I've moved to an area with a few decent LGS's, I figured I'd go ahead and give them first stab at my business instead of the internet. Coming from an area over the past 7 years or so that had very poor LGS offerings, I figured it was the least I could do.

Running into my first time snag, however.....

How long does it usually take your LGS to get something that's available from their distributor, but they don't have in the store ?

Working on day 10 for some competition dies from RCBS which were supposedly on the order with my rifle that I picked up over a week ago now.

Just wondering at what point I should move from patient, to cranky.

JMHO ... don't get cranky on this transaction. They probably have no control over the delivery of your dies once they hang up the phone with their supplier.Take it as a message to do your business, when you can on the internet, and reserve the LGS and the good will you develop for those times when you really need an LGS.

Hard to "win back " good will.

For an accessory like that 10 days is reasonable. Here's why:
It might take only a day or two for the distributor actually to ship the item. But most places have some kind of "free shipping" deal where you buy X amount and get free shipping. If the LGS just placed a ground order (long guns, ammo, accessories) then they are probably waiting until they can piggyback your order to others to get the free shipping that allows them to sell you the product at a competitive price. When business is brisk they might order once or twice a week. But since business has slowed seemingly all over it might be 2 weeks.
Showing a little grace until someone does something really bad is never a bad idea in my book.

This may be a stupid question....why not Midway or Brownells?

No such thing as a stupid question !

We don't support 'em, they disappear.

All my shiz did come in today, thankfully.

I had a LGS get a special order gun for me, I ordered it and it came in the next day...

What, how is that, well when he called his distributor, they 1. had the gun in an easy to access spot. 2. had room to toss it in his shipment that they were in the process of packing.

So it really depends, it isn't economical for a shop to order one piece unless you are willing to pay the shipping or there is a hell of a markup.

You come in and ask for something we don't stock. A. Our dist has it...we order it, it is here usually in four or five days. B. they don't have it. Takes longer. Things that enter in to the equation are shipping charges. We operate on low margin and often have to "build" an order to get low/free shipping. We give the option for cust to pay shipping or wait a few days longer. 99 percent choose a few days more. Back ordered items are totally dependent on shipments to distributors and thence to us.
An item in stock at dist is usually there in five days.

The LGS is good, sometimes. In my area, there are several LGS, they all have whats on hand, nothing more. I've dealt with Midway for almost 12 years now, "everything" I need is ordered from them, Dick's and all the rest don't get my money! There are a couple of places, Gander and Sptsmns Warehs. about 12 miles from me, bullets and powder, otherwise, Midway.
