Police constable in serious condition from gunshoot wounds received in the abdomen and arm

A man who is suspected of shooting and injuring a policeman along Portmore Drive in St Catherine, on Wednesday night, was hours later shot and killed after he and a crony attacked a licensed firearm holder.
The dead man, who was said to be of brown complexion, slim build, and about 173 centimetres tall, was not identified.
According to the police, the licensed firearm holder was at his home when he was attacked by the two armed men. The firearm holder, said the police, shot at the men who ran and returned the fire. The police were called and on their arrival one of the men was found suffering from gunshot wounds nearby. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the man was later identified as the gunman who shot and injured the policeman. He was dressed in a red and white striped polo shirt, jeans pants and black and brown sneakers.
In the meantime, the police constable who works at the Organised Crime Investigation Division, was last night said to be in serious condition from the gunshot wounds he received in the abdomen and arm.
The St Catherine South police said the constable, who was off duty at the time of the shooting, was walking along Portmore Drive when he was approached by an armed man who opened fire at him. The injured cop, said the police, returned the fire but the gunman escaped unharmed.
"The policeman's firearm was not taken and there have been no reports that he was robbed," Deputy Superintendent Clive Blair of the St Catherine South Police Division told the Observer yesterday.
"The St Catherine South Police Division has taken a zero-tolerance approach against crime and we take this news against one of our own, or against any citizen as a matter of fact, very seriously," said Blair. The attack against the policeman, he said, was an indication of the wanton disregard criminals had towards law and order.
"Over the last few months the police have stepped up the pressure on the criminals in Portmore and surrounding areas and so far our efforts have been reaping some success with the confiscation of some 47 illegal guns in the division since January," Blair said.
