Life In Prison?

I don't want to throw fuel on this fire, but here you go.

Shooter was black. Thieves were all white, but apparently were known car thieves. It was an all white jury with 1 black person on it. It shouldn't matter, but I have to imagine it played into it. It was NOT a rough neighborhood. It was pretty middle class.

I don't know how you get him on 1st degree intentional homocide no matter how you slice it. Even if he's wrong.

Don't kill someone over your car. Doing so is called "murder". If someone is outside your house messing with your car call the cops.

Part of the difficulty in understanding a case like this is that the news report is just a summary of the court case. There are numerous questions (some of which have already been raised) that were probably answered in the court case, such as:

How close were the BGs and shooter?
How many shots were fired?
Did he reload and continue firing?
Did he aim at more than one target? (he certainly hit more than one)
Did he shoot them in the back?
Did he try to retreat?
Did the BGs have any weapons besides the tire iron?
Did any witnesses hear any verbal exchanges that might hint at the shooter's state of mind or intent?

I'd like to believe that most, if not all, of these questions were answered in the trial. As we are not privy to this information currently, all we can do is speculate.

I fail to see where there is enough information here to make any kind of judgement as to what happened that night and if it was self defense or illegal use of deadly force to defend property.

I bet the jury had a wee bit more information then was posted in the news article. I'd even bet that the judge gave the jury some pretty specific instructions as to what the law is in Wisconsin.

Tell you guys what, somebody find the trial transcripts and post them so we can have the same information the jury had, and I'll reopen this and we can discuss it.

As it is there is nothing to debate here. No one here has any idea what happened that night in Racine.

Jeff
