A while back I had a post on light 30-30 loads. I've settled on a 150gr lead bullet and 7.5grs of Unique to start with. But I forgot to ask what primer to use for this load. Standard or magnum? Thanks.

I would surely start out with standard and have done so with light loads in .30-30 and .30-06.

I have heard of using magnum primers to make up for airspace in a plinking load (They won't let me call them "squibs" any more.) but that would be a last resort if the standard just wouldn't shoot.

Unique lights fine with a standard primer. I have used a similar load with 165gr. Meister LFP bullets.

Speer #14 says magnum primers should be used with ball powders that are at or near full case capacity. They found lower SD with the magnum primer. Specifically, I know that it lists using a small magnum primer in .223 Rem loads with W748, H335, BL-(C)2 and maybe others. Since the same powders may be used in the 30-30, the same rules may apply(I don't have the book in front of me).

Hornady 7 says a non-magnum primer is fine with these powders.
