A friend of mine came over the other day with a new M&P 40 compact and 100 WWB and 50 PMC. There were 4-5 light strikes/FTF, some in each brand. Looking at the bullets you could see a tiny firing pin strike, but obviously not strong enough to ignite. The only thing I could think to tell her was to contact S&W and prob have to send it back to factory. Have other M&P's had this problem; if so what was the fix?

It was cleaned first and afterwards and I could see no problems. Accurate little sucker, I'll give it that!

One thing that the M&P is sensitive about is crud in the firing pin channel. Strangely enough, oil in the channel just seems to suck stuff into it. A bit of a pain removing the pin and cleaning.

Glocks have the same issue. You do NOT want to get oil in there with a striker system.

I own 3 M&P's with lots of rounds through each, and have never seen that problem.

I would let S&W (or at least a local Smith), have a look at it.

Most likely, you do not have to send your M&P in for service. From your description, it sounds like you have lubricant and crud fouling the firing pin channel.

This youtube video shows how to easily remove the firing pin and striker assembly so that you can clean the channel.

Gglass: can you relist the video? One point tho..it was a brand new gun; checked before shooting and seem pretty dry to me. No crud on new gun. In fact, there wasn't much crud after shooting 150 rounds. She's coming back again next week; will dismantle it, spray the striker area with brake cleaner, blow it out, and leave dry. Maybe that will help.

Thanks Video...thats what I was thinking; does the compact have a diff/shorter striker than full size? I had similar probs with Tarus Millininum (factory and reloads) and with Kahr P45 reloads only (till I went with Federal primers).

Had the same problem with my M&P 40. Picked up a new striker assembly from MidwayUSA and all is fine now. You can also have her call S&W they will fix it.

Light Strikes !

ulflyer, I wouldn't worry too much about the health of your M&P 40. Iv'e got an M&P 9mm, and they seem to be more prone to striker channel crud than Glocks. I think the odd firing pin shape of the Glocks may let less crud into the channel than on the Smiths. Just watch for light strikes and clean the channel and DON"T USE LUBES in the channel, and be sure to leave it dry.
