Lightweight Pocket Auto - For Running

I bought a PF9 for running, it works quite well with an IWB holster if I tighten the drawstring on my running shorts down a bit.

God I hope I never have to shoot a dog, I would feel almost as bad as if I shot a person.

Respectfully, not sure small dog treats would be of much use against a large, aggressive dog (or a pack of dogs)..

No one is suggesting a runner kill every dog he runs up on, just that having a firearm IN CASE he runs up on the type dog who is not looking for a doggie treat but actually IS a threat to a runner is a prudent thing to have..

I love animals, in fact my Australian Shepherd is laying near my feet as I type this. But there have been times when I ran up on large, feral dogs, in packs that were definitely a threat to my health and safety..

At those times I was glad I had a firearm along and not a couple of "small dog treats" for any necessary defense..

Best Wishes,

Jesse

PX15,
You make an excellent point. I was thinking of your average neighbor hood dog and not the feral type, but you are certainly right there are feral dogs just like feral people out there. My choice, because of the sweat involved would probably be my LCR or my Kahr P380 over the Kel-tec p32 simply for the firepower. The LCR is pretty light. Just a thought.......

Hey, I'm 67... Can't get much more age on ya than that and still outrun those chihuahua's..

I didn't mean to start a big thing here. Just to clarify my situation I live and run out in the country. My long runs can be over 20 miles usually on dirt roads. I'll explore new routes to be adventurous and to break things up and my biggest fear is feral dogs. Not curious pets. I have seen coyotes before but they seem to be generally afraid of people. I should have explained that better.

Thanks guys.

I hate to say it, but you really should shoot the guns and find out what one you like best.
My large hands like the feel of the Taurus TCP, the trigger is the good too (relatively) I have not shot it though.
I have shot the LCP, its a well made gun but the trigger really sucks.

I would have bought the TCP if I hadn't found the PF9 for such a good price.

I would carry some small dog treats to toss out rather than shot any dogs. Hey it won't be long before someone suggests a 1911.
That might be a real good idea!!! I used to get regular deliverys from UPS and my dogs would raise cain whenever he came to the house. One day, all of a sudden, they quit barking at him and when I looked out they were sitting at attention next to the door of the truck. He had a big bag of cheap dog biscuits and had thrown a couple out for them each time he came.
As I mentioned, dog packs are a whole nuther story and your main job will be to determine which one is the ring leader. For the most part, you'll be doing the dog and the neighborhood a huge favor by popping him.

The ability to stop a threat from a feral dog, coyote, or whatever, depends on one thing....shot placement. A .22LR will do the job if put where it counts.

I carry a P32 w/73gr FMJ Fiocchi and I can shoot it much better than the P3AT or LCP. Especially if you are going to wait for the dog to "clamp" down on you, any gun will do. Put it against the skull and fire. The KelTecs are available with a parkerized finish that should hold up well to the sweat and rain.

I don't believe most of us carry a concealed firearm because we expect to HAVE to shoot something..

I believe most of us just carry a firearm for defensive purposes, and because in today's America, it's prudent.

I've been carrying, legally, since 1966.. So far, never even had to "display" my firearm, much less have to threaten or shoot someone, or something, with it, other than a 4 1/2' rattlesnake my Australian Shepherd wandered up on last summer on our daily walk..

But I will say it's mighty comforting to HAVE one available, and hopefully never needed.. Much better to have a firearm and never need it, than to need a firearm and not have one available.

Just personal opinion, no offense.

Best Wishes,

jesse

I run with a Keltec P3AT in a Bianchi bellyband with the gun at the right side of my abdomen. It stays put without any problems. It does get damp from the sweat in the bellyband. Just remove it from the holster when done and rust has not been a problem. I am thinking about adding a laser since these short barreled guns aren't the easiest to aim.

I would choose one of the .380s for protection from large dogs. The KT 32 does not work reliably with JHPs without modification to the magazines. The 380 can be loaded with HPs that would be better suited for your purpose. Small caliber FMJs would have much more likelihood of glancing off the skull if you attempted a head shot at a less than optimal angle. The 380 JHPs would be better in that regard and would still penetrate deep enough to reach a dogs heart or lungs on a body shot. I carry a Ruger LCP loaded with Remington 102 gr GS or 90 gr Federal HS. I feel confident with either and while not as good as my 9mm or .45 it is capable enough against two legged predators too.

I just picked up a "summer time wearing shorts" carry P3AT. For that use I find it pretty good. A lot easier to carry than a PPK or a Mustang.
