Welcome, great area you are from, hopefully the winters will lighten up on you. Sorry to hear about the devistation to the deer population but keep getting out the trip is always worthwhile.

Welcome! There's some really knowledgable people at this forum. -Some I'd like to sit down and have a beer with. Shoot the Wolves. Shoot the Coyotes. Shoot the cats. The deer will come back.

Like to introduce myself

Hi All-

Welcome, Tim! The original message has been reformatted below for reading clarity:

"...Hi All-
My name is Tim and I live in central New York state about an hour north of Binghamton, NY. My interests include shooting, hunting, collecting old firearms, and fishing...mainly for more shells to shoot. I am retired from the logging industry after being disabled in a sawmill accident in 1990 when a guy dropped a lift of red pine cabin logs on me. It crushed discs in my lower back resulting in two surgeries ending in failures to fuse the bone graft at L3-4 to S1. I can't hardly sit down to my PC and it's been that way for 15 years now.

I'm just able to still hunt deer. With the last two winters being nasty there aren't many deer in the state land. I'm surrounded by approximately 4500 acres and all I have to shoot is the occasional red fox or lots of coyotes and brush wolves. They have become a real pain in the arse for the deer that were plentiful here in the past. New York has opened my county to the use of any centerfire rifle to harvest deer this year in hopes of allowing hunters to have a sporting chance of success. I doubt many will be taken where I live, but I'll go as I have for the last 35 years.

Some of the firearms I have include:
  • Savage Model 99
  • Belgian Browning A5 light twelve
  • Marlin .444
  • .22 rifles
  • Blackpowder rifles
I also own eleven handguns with my favorite being a 7mm/08 Contender with a scope that sure has taken lots of deer.

I am getting started in reloading of centerfire shells and shooting trap & skeet on occasion. I also shoot bow...mostly at bow shoots. It helps to keep a good eye, but as for hunting it seems like a waste of time due to lack of deer. This is thanks to the insurance companies and reintroduction of natural enemies like brush wolves and coyotes. We now even have mountain lions roaming the state! Some call them puma cats. I haven't seen any myself but the fellow next door has pictures of one in the road less than a mile from my home. I hope to get to know some of the regulars here, as I'll be back.

Just remember, if you're gonna' carry it, make sure it's loaded heavy and shoots straighter than an arrow!

Regards,

tim582001..."

Welcome, Tim. Glad to have you here. Check out the reloading forum. I learn something almost every day there. Here, too, for that matter.

Blue Jays, you can edit my posts any time you want ;)

Tim, welcome.

Sorry to hear of your pain. I wish you well.

In terms of 'old firearms', i have only one story. When i was about 12, my father traded an old junker jeep for an 1863 Springfield .58 caliber caplock. She was so freakin' beautiful. In wonderful condition. We'd shoot her often at the 'dump' (before they became 'landfills', where now one would be arrested for such activities).

I lament the day that I let her go when I got into financial straights. (Should have sold the wife, who left later anyway.) It wasn't a gun I'd keep in the nightstand, but dang: so much history there.

I'd like to read about some of your 'old guns' sometimes.

Hi. Welome aboard. Hope you find this forum to be something you want to keep coming back to. Oh and by the way, the rule is the new person gets to buy ammo for all! :neener:

Hi Tim-

What do you think about that Contender that you have? I have to find someone who has one near me because they look like they would be a hoot to shoot.

Hello tim,

Sorry for the delay, but that's just how I am. Ask anyone here. I'm usually a day late and a dollar short. :p :D

Welcome to the High Road.

Welcome to THR
My Elementary age youth was spent in the creeks and ponds of Gilbertsville, right in the middle of the Oneonta,Sydney, Norwich triangle. Are you anywhere near there?

Hi I am new too.

seems like a cool place to hang out. Sorry about your back, I work sugery and do these types of cases everyday...my dad has his disc fused too. He couldn't do anything but sit, he slept for 9 months in a recliner chair...It was bad but the sugery worked great for him. He was up walking the same day, it was amazing...
welcome
