M16s are the worst semi auto in the world besides those new chinese things, my brother who just graduated boot camp last week dosent ever wanna pick up or use an m16 again first he had a brand new m16a4, first day on the range his 3rnd burst turned into full auto due to a broken selecter, second day bolt broke, on his shooting finals it jammed 7 times so many that the Instructer snatched up that rifle and has it sent away and a new one brought to him so he could qualify and then that one also jammed up several times. so moral of the story only reason the m16 has been around so long is because america adopted it and dosent want to adopt something else that isnt american built because we are a stubborn people.

Just thought I would add this one.

I'm guessing you feel the same way about AR 15s?

1.) Bolt Action Rifle: Mauser 98 action. The birthplace of controlled round feeding, custom rifles including the infamous pre-64 model 70 and the 1903 Springfield. It wasn't Mauser's first design, but it was Mauser's best.

2.) Semi-Automatic Rifle: My ar-15 (Colt 6920) might be the most reliable semi-automatic firearm I have ever owned. Arguably I have shot the thing more than all my other rifles combined in the past 2 years, and that also says something about the 'fun factor' of shooting an AR in competition.

3.) Best Revolver: SW model 10. I love my Colts but S&W keeps soldiering on with a tried and true 100 + year old design in 38 Special.

4.) Best Autoloader, single action: Colt 1911 it's been fluffed and buffed and de-horned, railed improved, covered in lights and lasers and copied by many an MFG over the past 100 years--but still fights on in places where fighting doesn't play by the rules. JMB got this one right way back when.

5.) Best Autoloader, other: I don't own a Glock but I have to admit they are a well made reliable piece. You can blame aggressive marketing or internet anecdotes all you want, but it's my experience that Glocks seem to jam the least of any handgun I've seen in any 'stock' competition. I still find them ugly and souless. But they work. Too bad they don't look like a BHP, which might be the most popular 9mm design in service worldwide today.

6.) Pump Action Shotgun: Remington 870. I just don't think anything has been done 'better' in a pump gun since the 870.

7.) Fully automatic weapon: My experience is limited to a couple dozen firearms fired strictly for fun, from 22lr to belt fed mayhem. So, strictly based on smiles per bullet, historical significance and longevity and flexibility it SHOULD be the Ma Duece, but I'll pick the B.A.R. because ther average joe can actually carry it around. From Clyde Barrow to Commando Kelley to Cpl . Kirby in 'Combat!' the BAR has always been my favorite.

8.) Lever Action Rifle: Marlin 336. Stronger than a Winchester, side ejecting to you can scope it and arguably the west was 'pretty much won' by the time it came along. Still my fave levergun to hunt with and iconic in its own right.

9. I couldn't vote for best semi-auto shotgun as I don't own one and have only fired a few.

10. Most flexible handgun: 4 inch 357 wheelgun made by Ruger or SW. This is the best answer to what handgun for... you name it. Bears, zombies, self defense, bowling pins, long range on a budget plinking (with 38's) fun factor, etc etc. From the nightstand to the nitty gritty for most people that want a reliable powerful defensive arm this is the way to go.

So by Greatest you mean most influential, or highest in sales? That's what I'm gathering based on the responses.

There are probably $5000+ samples that are better in each category, but much more rare or high-end.

Can't really disagree with the list as most long guns do me more harm than good, and weighing in there is really not following what I shoot the most.

DA revolver~ the original M&P... SW Model 10. Every gun I shoot for the rest of my life has to live up to a lifetime of comparison to my first non-rimfire handgun.

6.) Pump Action Shotgun: Remington 870. The numbers don't lie. The greatest pump action shotgun ever designed is without a doubt the Remington 870. It has been around for nearly 70 years.

The Model 12 turns 100 next year (this one from 1957 is only 53 years old)
The Model 97 turned 100 14 years ago. (this one from 1937 is only 74 years old)
