Listing Your Toys, Bad Idea?

Why would someone care what you have? Have you ever had someone ask you how you like the car you are driving when they are thinking of buying one like it? Same reason with firearms. They are not cheap, they are non-returnable, so it is nice to be able to see who has one and ask how they like it and how it performs. I think listing it is personal preference. I do not list all mine but I do list my faves. I think it gives you an idea of what kind of person you are talking to also when you can see what their tastes are when it comes to firearms. Kind of like the old saying "you can telll alot about a man by the type of shoes he wears". :)

Gun lists

Just the proximity of the words makes my flesh crawl...I have spent time detailing my list and as it approaches completion, it requires modification, and the question of including all is always present and thus requires circumspection...discretion is the better part yada yada. And please never let her find it with the price paid column or value column revealed!

Advertising your guns can only harm you, it can bring you no good.

Well...not necessarily. Say someone sees that I have a G22...and they just happen to have a bunch of G22 mags that they don't need anymore...so they contact me and offer to GIVE them to me just because I'm such a nice guy. That would bring me good...and it wouldn't happen if I didn't list my carry gun in my signature. ;)

Regarding thieves...I would think a thief would try to AVOID a house where they know the owner has and knows how to use firearms. There may be exceptions to that, but in general nobody likes to get shot.

Regarding my company knowing what guns I own, so what.

Regarding the government knowing what guns I own, so what.

To the people who don't want to know what guns I own, don't read my signature.

Now, if you own 75 guns and you list every one of them out for all to see then I would have to wonder what you were trying to accomplish by doing that. But, as is the case for me, if you're just listing out a couple of your favorites or your carry guns for the sake of being a resource to someone who may be interested in purchasing the same gun or who is having a problem with the same gun...good for you. :)

Complete strangers, (and by and large, people who post on firearms boards are complete strangers) no. Coworkers/neighbors/family members/friends, yes.

I don't have a business card that lists the kind of car I drive, nor do I wear a sandwich board listing the kind of car I drive, nor is the type of vehicle I drive posted anywhere on my door. But that's just me, and I'm kinda anti-social that way. Of course, a quick look at the join date of a person and the number of posts they have generally give me a pretty good idea of what type of personality I'm dealing with.... ;)

If someone, especially on a forum like this, wants to know about experiences with a particular firearm, they generally start a thread titled

"Hey, what do y'all think about XYZ's model 123, I was thinkin' a gettin' one."

Wow... you know I thought most people on this board were mature enough to not judge someone on an arbitrary number such as post count or join date...

but I guess I would be wrong. I usually judge people on comments that they make, kind of like how I'm judging that I don't think I'll be paying much attention to any more of yours.

Ah yes another way to pigeonhole and condescend to people without taking the time to base judgments on objective data.

I do post the list. If I am immature at my age I'd take it as a compliment, but don't think I can make that claim.

I post a list for a few reasons. Partly because it helps people know whether I am speaking from experience when posting about, say Glocks, rather than parroting internet scuttlebut or what I read in the latest pseudo-hardcore mall ninja rag. Partly because it may (and in fact has) led to conversations of special interest to me about, as a case in point, smaller 1911s. Partly because I DO like to see what people own myself - primarily for the same reason I mentioned first in reverse - I prefer to read first hand experience when discussions are on guns I may like to own, but also because it gives me an idea of the overall firearms interests of the person posting. And finally I post a list because this is after all, not that you'd know it sometimes, a forum for discussing firearms, so by definition, firearams are on topic. Unlike sophomoric group-think amateur psychology, I might add.

If I really were insecure and immature, I'd fall in with the cool kids and "peer pressure" and delete the list in my signature.

I enjoy seeing what kind of guns people own, so I appreciate the lists. I really wasn't joking when I said my main reason was the possibility that my wife might read this. In 18 years of marriage, the only thing I keep from her is the key to the gun safe.

Plenty mature enough, thank you. I do judge folks on what they say. Two facets of that is just HOW MUCH they say and how fast they say it. Saying a lot and having a lot to say are not always one in the same. I'd point out the winking emoticon at the end of that part of my post, but since you won't be paying much attention...

Ignore me all you want, I won't care. Again that anti-social thing comes in handy... :)

Darn the bad luck, I went and tried to change my sig to list the stuff I could remember off the top of my head, and the silly thing wouldn't save. Told me I was limited to 554 characters....

List

Mine are all guarded by..........

German Shephard (K9)
Pit Bull Terrier
Rot Weiler (laser collar)
Yorkshire Terrier (breath of death)
2 Tactical Hermit Crabs
2 HP Guinea Pigs SS

Let's assume the Feds, house burglars, government gun-grabbers and various other undesirable types know about these forums. And some know how to hack into data bases or otherwise find your identity. Is it a good idea to advertise whats in your toy box?

I'm not worried about the federal, state, or local governments knowing what I have. They can have the exact same things I have, but they cannot have what I have, if you know what I mean.

I could tell a thief I have guns and which ones, but I'm not exactly sure Mr. Burg's going to find any of them within the 2 minute time constraint. You see, 2 minutes is about how long he would have to comfortably grab all the stuff he wants before ADT notifies the police. He would definitely need a good half hour (scratching his head) figuring out just where I tucked these babies. At 3 minutes, deputies are already on their way. If Mr. Burg is still inside my house at the 6 minute mark, he will likely be trapped inside or run outside and face arrest.

It's ok for me to advertise. Yep.

My sidearm is ALWAYS in a safe. Either right next to the bed, in a holster on my hip or in my hand. As for what happens when someone tries to take it? Heh. DITTO!

As for the gubmint, they've got records on all my current guns (filed when I bought them).

As for BG's, please note that my address has recently changed.
The new address is: 2356 Blueberry Ln, Coos Bay, OR.

To those who dislike reading gun lists in sig lines, don't. ;)
(At least I put all mine in a single line so they don't take up much space. :neener: )

A farce...

That whole story is a farce. They are just creating a false scenerio to try and make legal gun owners out to be a liability to the safety of others. They cite one case from 3 yrs ago and even that one does not show evidence that he was singled out because of his weapons. It is just a way to make gun owners into pariahs and make them feel like they have to be quiet about their guns and therefore not be a positive voice for gun ownership.

Any BG would have to get through my dogs to get to my gun safe anyway. The Rottweiler is a sweet, good-natured dog, but he turns into Cujo if someone comes in the house unannounced. The borzoi isn't the brightest critter on earth and even better natured than the Rottweiler, but when the Rottweiler goes Cujo, she joins in. When she goes all Cujo, she transforms from big and goofy to big and terrifying. She stands 35 inches tall at her hips, and when she is in attack mode you understand why the Russians used these dogs to hunt wolves and bears. I suspect that I'd have to clean up burglar poop off the carpet.
