Listing Your Toys, Bad Idea?

My real list? What if my wife reads it!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have our correct answer!

That is my primary reason. Also, the sheer number of guns I buy is a bit embarrassing. But I do prefer not to let the government or anyone else know exactly how many weapons I own and what those weapons are.

I think of it as a newbie thing. When I see one, I figure it's a new person (to guns) or a kid. I really don't care at all what your inventory is, nor am I eager to show mine.

Long sig lines are bad form anyway. I won't name names, but there are people out there (on this and other forums) with sig lines that are so long that even a one word post takes up half a page.

Unfortunately, many of the people with the full text of "Atlas Shrugged" as their sig also are the ones that post a ridiculous number of those one-word-that-adds-little-to-the-discussion-type posts.

Two other forum pet peeves: Posts with 97 mega-pixel pictures that stretch the whole screen to 40,000 pixels wide so that you have to scroll left and right just to read the subsequent posts, and posts with horrendously long hyperlinks that do the same thing. Again, bad form.

However, the main reason that I don't put a list into my sig line.....

I'd have to change it about six times per week.

Good to hear. Now if the state of Mass would just let ya'll have CCW permits for $10 like NH....

Yeah, well you can't have everything. I make up the extra $90 by buying cheap booze and cigarettes in NH.

A couple of friends of mine are Customs and DEA agents so the Fed's have an inside line on me even if they don't really check all those 4473's or keep track of the number of times I've been pinged for buying multiple guns in one day. When I moved to MA the helpful gentleman at the Criminal History System Board told me that I didn't have to register the guns I brought into the state just that it was helpful in case they were ever stolen, but they know about the 20 some guns I've added to the collection from dealers here in MA anyway so WTH,and I've been a good boy about sending them in an FA-10 when I've found good deals up at Kittery.I've shot with pretty much every LEO on the island at some point in time, even let a fair few of them borrow guns, not to mention that this place is just too small to not know everybody so yeah, The Man already has a pretty good idea of what guns I have and other than wanting me to come shoot with them, they don't really seem to care, unless I buy something new and don't let them try it out.

If some thief decides to target me,as opposed to the countless people on here who have larger and more valuable collections or the God only knows how many gun stores he'll pass on his way out here, and can figure out who I am and where exactly I live, and find the place - as UPS and Fedex can't- I still wouldn't worry much as he'd be one of the dumbest crooks in the world for expending that much energy for nothing he couldn't steal much closer to home.If I posted under an actual name and location and had a collection that didn't just fit in one safe ( we had to remove 2 doors and casings to get the safe in the basement so they'll be here for a bit getting it back out ) then I probably wouldn't advertize just like if I had a car worth stealing I probably wouldn't post who I am and where I live on automobile message boards.

I am of a different mindset on gun security than some on here. I do believe in keeping your guns locked up and as inaccessible as possible but I do not believe all this cloak and dagger "hide them from the light of day or the bad guys will get them" stuff. It is just to fatalistic and conspiracy minded for my tastes. If you are going to enjoy collecting I think it is only natural to use, show to friends, discuss, etc. If not then why are you collecting? If it is purely self defense and you feel you are in that much danger then build a bunker and hide your armory there. In fact why not live in it...that would be safer than a house. It is true that someone with a masonry blade and some time can get into most anything but what do you think the odds of that happening really are??? We might as well be worried about being hit by meteorites. Most intruders are going to grab what they can easily and quickly carry away. Not stand around using loud power tools that they hauled in through the window or found in your garage. If you are really worried get a dog. My partner used to work for Protection One home security and the studies show that the NUMBER ONE defense against theft is a dog, second is a well lighted perimeter.

Paragraphs are your friends.

Don't be too jealous. :)

My bent stick is at the smith, I'll post picks when I get it back :p

I don't think I'd post that.It looks to me like you've got a catapult capable of firing more than one oinker per per pull of the trigger and I know for a fact that's a post 86 model Multiple Swine Destructive Device, short barrelled to boot :scrutiny:

This thread has made me think. I've never put a sig line in part because, as a writer, I have a fairly high profile in certain niche markets and I like to protect my privacy. On the other hand, I like to earn money so I can buy more guns. I've decided to include a self-promoting signature line, so buy the book in the sig line below. Thank you.

Listing firearms in sigs? Haven't seen any in this thread. ;)

I don't do it because I don't have all that impressive of a list to post. And if I did have an impressive list to post, I wouldn't do it so as not to appear to be putting down those who do not have what I have. Oh, and I'm lazy too. That's why I don't have a sig of any kind.

It doesn't bother me that others do it, though. I don't know their motives, so I don't judge them. It is just not something I'd choose to do.

I wonder what a former gun-owner in Australia or England would have to say on this subject.

I do recall reading some posts back then about an incredible number of guns being lost, stolen, sold, thrown in the river and just just plain misplaced about the time that the government passed the laws that made everyone safe over there.

I've always thought that listing one's firearms in one's sig line is just a sign of immaturity. Can't imagine why anybody'd think that anybody else would care to see a list of firearms.

I guess I've never thought of it that way. I list my handguns (all two of them) for the benefit of others. I can't count the number of times where someone has PM'd me saying, "Hey, I notice you have a G22. What do you think about..."

I guess I'll have to rethink that. Then again, maybe I like it the way it is.

Those aren't caps.....it is just a larger font size. It wouldn't be yelling, more like speaking loudly......

GTSteve03, good list.
A 30-30, a 12 gauge, and a 38 Special.
Thanks. I thought I had most of my bases covered, however I seem to have developed surplus rifle-itis and my 30-30 is being traded for a Swedish Mauser.

I may just end up taking my humble list off my sig. I thought this was a firearms-related forum, and I felt that my list, along with many others, was a good way for people interested in firearms to see what other people collected. Kind of like gun window shopping or whatnot. But it appears that people view this as somehow "immature" or "annoying."

I don't want to offend anyone or appear childish, so I guess I just need to grow up and take it down. :scrutiny:

I'm with the group that just doesn't really give a crap what someone else has, and can't for the life of me understand why anyone would be interested in what I've got.

FWIW, my first thought on seeing those is "how the hell old is that guy, and why the hell does he think we care what he's got"...

I am not one to list firearms in much detail. Few people actually know very much about my "collection" and I like to keep it that way. It really isn't much to write home about. But most here list references to individual firearms from time to time and you could read all their posts and put it all together if you want to take the time. I other aspect is that most of the guns are locked up anyway and you really aren't going to hide these things from the law enforcement or the Feds if it ever came down to that (in my opinion). I do think there is a privacy issue, but I'm not all that interested in detail what somebody else has or does not have. Afterall, you could make up everything if you choose to.
