Llama Super Comanche

Hello Gents,

I was doing a little bit of research on the Llama Super Comanche 44MAG revolver via this forum after I found one listed on a Canadian forum (yeapers a Canuk is among you).

The revolver in question was a 8.5 inch version and had very, very few rounds put through it before it became a bed stand gun for an old fellow. He sold it to it's previous owner that threw it into the safe.

It was listed for 350CDN (about 280USD) and I figured if it was junk I wouldn't be too much out of pocket.

Well she showed up yesterday and I'm pretty happy, while the finish can't be compared to a proper S&W Model 29 the fit is much better than I expected. She's nice and tight and fit my mitts like a glove (as do the Model 29's).

Can hardly wait to hit the range with some 44 Specials to start and then few mild 44MAG loads.

I'll report back afterward, if I've still got both hands left

I kinda remember hearing about them a while ago, a budget S&W 29 clone. Never actually ran across one until I saw it on the forums for sale.

Still want a proper Model 29 mind you, it's like a 63 Corvette Split-Window Coupe in the looks department. I don't think they ever made a better looking revolver IMHO.

It seems S&W did a re-issue of it lately but it's still a bit pricey for me.

I'll keep looking for a decent one at a good price up here in Canada.

Back when I was a kid in the '60s, they always had a pretty flashy section in Shooter's Bible. I don't know about the quality of their revolvers, but their marketing was top notch.

The revolver didn't blow-up and shot better than I could first time out.

Pretty happy with my purchase and feel like I got a great deal.

Back around 1983 Mackies gun shop in Kodiak Alaska had several Llamas's at a price too good to be true. I and 2 buddies jumped on them and I thought how nice looking the gun was compared to my Ruger Superblackhawk. I whipped up some nice handloads and was so disappointed that at 25 yards from a bench rest the best I could do was about 5 inches while my Superblackhawk would do 2 inch groups. Notified my 2 buddies about this so we bench tested their Llamas and all 3 shot those 5 inch groups. All 3 of us sold them. Too much power for self defense and not accurate enough for hunting.
You might just want to benchrest your's and I'd be interested in you posting the results. Maybe their quality control is better than back then, hope so.

Hello again gents,

Just got the Llama back from the gunsmith and no it wasn't for anything wrong with it

I've always loved the looks of a 4" S&W Model 29 and in Canada unless you have a Prohibited license you can't own a handgun with a barrel under 106mm (about 4.2 inches).

It's a rather silly law and there really isn't any sense to be made of it. However, we can get our pistols/revolvers modified to 106mm

So off to the smith the Llama went. He made a call to chop the barrel a little more than 106 because of the top rib but I'm pretty happy with the results. Looks like she came from the factory in this length and all the barrel markings are intact.

PS, I've taken her to the range several times prior and fired her off a rest and she's a great shooter SirPleasent. Maybe I got lucky

Looks like the smith did a nice job. Congrats. 106MM huh. Well, you fixed that just fine.

Yes Llama revolvers seem quite unknown to many,don't try to shoot Ruger only level loads in them and they are decent guns. I have 6" examples in .44 and .357mag that are satisfactory. Both blued, .44mag $100usd in late 1999 and .357 $160 in 2006.

I bought one new years ago, I sold it to the town super he did not mind the recoil as much as i did. As far as i know he still shoots it today he use to tell me how well he like it, they were a good gun for the price not everyone needs a $1,000.00 gun to put in thier night stand.

Hello Gents,

Just got back from the range and I'm a happy camper!

The pistol was great and everything went off w/o a hitch.

I'd like to tell you all that it made me into a marksman but my range buddy said he'd rat me out.

However, at 10 yards had no problem putting them where the pistol was pointed. It was sighted in bang on.

The gun is a completely different beast now, much louder, more recoil and blazing muzzle flash . . . in other words EXACTLY what I wanted

I can't hardly wait to do some hand loads.

Just as a side note, I was shooting 240gr AE and Winnie rounds for the most part. Nice and stout with a good bang/flash.

However, my range buddie brought along some 180gr Remingtons and they were amazing. Way louder and much more flash. Need to get a box or four of those.

Thanks for the advice Moonclip, I don't think I'd want to try some Ruger only loads in the Llama. Need to pick a Redhawk or Super Redhawk for that.

Now if only I could get one of those lightweight 4" S&W 44MAG revolvers into Canada legally . . .

The Smith did an impressive job. I like the looks of it.

HKS speedloaders for the S&W mod 29 should work well. Replacement grips may be a problem to find and the wood factory grips can be a bit uncomfortable with heavy loads. I fire mainly .44spl out of my Llama.
