Big Boomer, personally I don't like them 200 gr. bullets. I prefer the 300 and 370 gr. loads for my S&W 460 Mag.

I've tried the 300's and use them alot as well but have never gotten my hands on any of the 370grain cast stuff as I can't find it around here. I know, I know there is always the internet...

What do you like about the 370's other than the heavier bullet class and being cast? What velocity are you able to achieve with those?

BigBoomer, I am getting the 370 gr. hard cast from Ranger Rick.

I like the 370 for bigger game, the 300 work fine as well. I am getting about 1600 fps with the 370 gr. bullets. I work more for accuracy then speed. Also not as much flash.

I am thinking about getting a .460 to go with my 3 .500s, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. The way things are going, I may have to get it pretty soon, or not get it or anything else again.

After reading the responses & pondering for hours on which gun I should get I've decided to go with the 460. I will eventualyy get a 44mag but first the 460.

So today i get to go home from work a little early. I decide this is a good time to go to the gun store & get my new toy. Apparently there was a memo sent out to the gun shops in my area to not sell guns today or something. I go into... let's call it gun shop A cash in hand.

"can I help you?"
yes i want to buy a S&W 460 XVR with the 8-3/8" bbl.
"We don't have any in stock."
Ok can you order one for me?
"yes we are able to order one"
Great how much is it going to cost me
..... here's where things go astray
Well I'll have to call the distributor & check the availability & his prices.
...... And then the guy just stands there. So I ask
Are you going to check for me?
...... And the guy gives me this look like i just asked if i can have one of his kidneys. And he continues to stand there. So again I ask.
can you get the price on it for me?
...... Again the guy just stands there with this look like, your serious you want me to put forth a little extra effort to help the customer & make a sale. It's mid day in the middle of the week so it's not like their distributors are closed or anything. I get fed up with this guy standing there & not checking on the price & whatnot for me. Here I am money in hand ready to buy the gun and these turds act like that. I finally said something to the effect of screw this place you lost a customer.

If that wasn't bad enough i go into two other gun stores and have almost the exact same scenario happen. Really what the hell is going on here? I'm getting tired of the people in this town and their attitudes.... I live in the Baton Rouge, LA area. It's like everywhere I go people have this kind of attitude or act all stuck up. You would think these people that own the shops would have some sence and do what they could to help the customer especially when your ready to buy something from them right then & there. But no they get this attitude like they don't care if they sell anything, make a new customer or keep an old one happy and sure ass hell aren't going to do any extra work to make that sale even if it is something as simple as making a quick phone call. Sorry to go off on a rant but that just pissed me off today & i'm still a tad upset about it. I think I'm just going to go and find a 460 on gunbroker.com.

E.W...
Wish I could tell from your description *** is goin' on with those folks!? Can't be too many folks crossing the threshold looking to spend that kind of money. I know what its like when you've made up your mind, head out cash in hand, and something else pops up to stop you...hang in there, the big fella's only a few days away! Maybe you're not dressing right - you know those BMW salesmen never step out the door to help if you're wearin' your work clothes!!!!

WOW that really sucks. I would raise hell with any of them gun shops.

I have the opposite happen here, I usually walk into one of the gun shops I go to, and the owners always says, Alex have I got a gun for you.

Bigger is Better ,
Where in the world did you come up with that?? The X-frame is designed for the powerful loads. I think you may want to do more research before posting such stuff.

Dear Redhawk, it's an issue of points of view: you have yours, more than right, but I have mine, if you don't mind man. Thank you

Bigger is Better, if it was a fact not an opinion I would agree. But you are just not making any factual comments.

Like I said, you need to do more research. Giving out poor advice or misinformation is not in anyone's benefit.

The S&W X-Frame is every bit as strong as the BFR frame. But if you have factual information on the contrary, please post your source.

And yes I do mind, if you are giving out misinformation.

...But if you have factual information on the contrary, please post your source.

My source si myself, and factual information I can give you because my personal experiences give me this right: I've seen three - not one, but three -S&W revolvers in .460 Magnum blowing up in front of my eyes, and one of this, a 12" PC Hunter model, at no more of 10 inches from my nose, and no more of two minutes after I shot it myself! I can assure you my friend that in Italy is not so common to see someone with a revolver like the .460 Magnum: my country is really backward in this way! :(
But, you are right about one thing, I've explained myself badly, I admit: I didn't want to say that all S&W X-frames are not enough strong or safe, but only ones chambering .460, because, I believe, of his high pressures and velocities. On the other hand, if I don't make a mistake, S&W X-frame was designed around .500 S&W cartridge, that work at very low pressures than .460. Correct?
Unfortunately, in Italy .500 S&W revolvers are not imported (neither S&W nor BFR), so about S&W fifty caliber I can't judge... "better for us", you'll think partners! :D
However I don't want argue for these bulls**t :)

Both the S&W 500 and 460 Mag operate under high pressures High 40,000 to 50,000 psi . I have owned 5 of the 460 Mags from S&W and I never seen one blow up. I have quit a few other guys I know that have the S&W 460 Mag, and none of them have a problem with the guns. If this was a problem with the gun, I am more than sure S&W would of put out a recall or had a warning posted, but I have not see one warning or recall.

Now answer this question for me, was the guns you witnessed blowing up, were the people reloading for them?

The only X-frame I seen blown up was a S&W 500 Mag, and it was double charged with tite group powder. It was a reloader error, not a gun problem. Improper loading will blow up any gun.

I have shot over 3000 rounds of 460 Mag through all my S&W 460 Mag. The guns are not weak by no means.

.460 12" Hunter, the one I've shot, was charged with factory 200 grs Hornady, and was its "fire baptism": blowed up at third round of second cylinder. About others two .460, a 10.5" PC and an 8 3/8", I didn't know the owners: if I've to be honest it's more than probable was a reload blunder the reason of the "explosions". I don't know
Which really impressed me was that a gun I believed imperishable and paid 1600€ (about 2250 US$), suddenly blow up, after just eight rounds, like a watermelon shot by a .50 caliber. ... Probably the opinion I have about S&W .460 revolvers is quite conditioned also by this episode, 'cause I think "if it happened two minutes before, when it was in my hand and I shot it?".

Like I said, I have thousands of rounds down mine and my buddies have a bunch of rounds down there's and never one problem.

I trust the X-frame, I have to I own a few of them.

Owning both the Xframe and the BFR I do put more faith in the BFR. However the BFR's recoil is MONSTROUS compared to the Xframe. I attribute it to the grips.

I would love to have another BFR if it just didn't hurt so damn much!

Big Boomer, I also own both the BFR and X-frame. I have the S&W 500 and S&W 460 in the X-frame, and I own a 500 Mag and 45-70 in the BFR. I don't find the recoil any more in my BFR than I do in my X-frame.

But what I find is the recoil in the BFR is different then in the X-frames.
The X-frame the recoil come more straight back at me and the BFR the recoil want's to roll in my hand.

BFR barrel

A question for Redhawk: do you know if the Custom Shop of the BFR (Precision Center I think it names) makes revolver with barrel longer than 10.5" (like 12" or more)? I ask you because you have two pieces BFR.

Bigger is Better, I don't know what length the Precision Center will make the barrels. My 45-70 is a 10 inch barrel.

But here is there contack information.

Redhawk...there was a recall for a few S&W performance center guns.......check it out here.

S&W .460 recall

buck460XVR, I know of this recall, it was because of the bad barrels they had that they found could split.
I had to send my PC model in.

Nothing to do with blowing up or weak gun.

Lotta versatility in both guns: you go from cowboy loads to hunting loads with either.

.460 has a higher (and more expensive) top-end. If you're a reloader, there is no problem with $.

Unless the longer cylinder and less graceful X-frame are a problem, I have to agree: .460.

Mine looks like this:

Enjoy!
