Due to the powder shortage, I have a couple of pounds of 4227 and have had difficulty finding other powders I like. Wondering if anyone has used 4227 with 45 acp. What loads have you found to work if any?

As a magnum pistol powder I would think it would be too much pressure for the 45acp. I would also think the 45acp does not have the capacity for such a powder.

I agree, 4227 is much too slow a powder for use in a low pressure cartridge like the 45 Auto. Using it in the .44 Magnum is a very good idea.

Luckily there are MANY powders that will work well in the 45 Auto, actually well over a dozen powder. Even now you can probably find one or two although very sparsely!

Clays, Titegroup, HP-38, Universal, 700X, PB, SR 7625, SR 4756, Trail Boss, W231, AutoComp, WST, AA#2, AA#5, ZIP, Bullseye, Unique, Promo, Red Dot, Green Dot and some VV powders and probably a few more I didn't think of.

Just the opposite.

Being a slow Magnum class powder, you couldn't stuff enough of it in a .45 ACP case with a bullet to get too much pressure.

Same goes for the .44 mag. You will run outta room long before you create too much pressure. One never has to worry about a double charge with 4227. But it does work very well for .44 mag. It is my "go to" powder for long piped revolvers and carbines in .44mag and in my .460 X-Frame.

I usually load 45 with hp_38 just hard to find lately. At least I have lots of primers. It like these shortages come in waves

I know HP-38 is very hard to find and it's also my goto powder in the 45 Auto. Of course W231 is the same powder but that's even harder to find.

A very good substitute is Ramshot Zip. That powder acts a lot like W231/HP-38.

I listed a lot of powders above that will work well in the 45 Auto but I agree HP-38 is a good choice along with Ramshot Zip.

I switch between Bullseye, win231, and 700x depending on what I can get my hands on. Lately its been a lot of 700x.
