I picked up a box of Hornady 45 ACP .452 250 Gr Hp/XTP on sale. Went to load them this afternoon and could not find any Load Data. Anyone have any suggestions for a good starting load. I am currently using W231 powder.
Info from Midway's LoadMap Series 45ACP:
Hornady 250gr HP/XTP
Remington case
RP 2 1/2 primer
tested at the maximum overall length for 45ACP at 1.275"
Using Win 231 powder
Start 4.5--588fps--13300psi
4.7--619--14300
4.9-649--15300
5.1-680--16300
5.3--710--17400
5.5--741--18400
5.7--772--19400psi
If you shorten overall length then reduce powder charges. This info is for comparison only. Work up carefully if using different components. Like mentioned, a very heavy bullet and a fast powder. Be careful. Use at your own risk.
Yep they are indeed .452. I did find load data for this under Colt 45. Nothing for ACP. The guy who sold them to me said he used them as a defense load. He was focused on mass and the low chance of the round passing through. This is my first 45; I have been shooting a 9 for 3 decades. I do like the feel of the M&P.
After this box is gone, I'd get some .451" 230 grain XTPs. They're a little more commonly used in the .45ACP. I use them with bullseye or power pistol, but W231 should be doable too. They also make a 200 and a 185 grain, both with about the same profile. I like the 230s myself, but I shot up a box of lighter ones when bullets were really hard to come by.
The rule is .451 jacketed/.452 cast lead for the ACP. The slightly bigger bullets are generally used in the .45 Colt, but as you can see, there are some folks who use them in autos too.
Thanks to all.... I will make the move to the 230 XTP after this box is done. I do tend to follow the recommended load data, I find it's recommended for a reason.
