Hi everyone!

I plan to load some Hi-Tek 124 LRN bullets from ACME in the next couple days and I thought I'd ask for advice. I would prefer to create a mild target round using 700-X because I've got four 14oz containers of the stuff, and it meters very well in my Dillon. Does anyone have a pet load with this combination, or even a similar recipe (by which I mean a LRN bullet around 124 grs)? I'm also considering using Unique, HP-38, or True Blue, but I'd rather use up the 700-X.

Also, I've noticed that OAL varies quite a bit with published loads; I've come across 1.050" in Ramshot (124 gr LRN), 1.065" in Lyman (120 gr LRN), 1.125" in Hodgdon (125 gr LCN), and 1.142" in Vihtavouri (124 gr LSWC). I know bullet shape matters because it affects case capacity, and "124 lead bullet" can mean a number of different shapes. What OAL do you go with for round nose bullets?

Regarding OAL - do you have the old profile 124 or the new profile. I used 1.06 with the old and 1.120 for the new. Can't help you with powder as I loaded these with Titegroup.

I'm not sure which profile I have. They just say 124 RN-NLG sized to .356. How can I tell?

Here's their old vs new bullet profiles - http://www.acmebullet.com/bullets-reloading-brass/HiTek-Coated-bullets?product_id=424

9mm 124 gr RN comes basically in two shapes, longer more pointed RN like Dardas/Z-Cast bullets on the right or shorter more rounded RN like Missouri bullet (MBC SmallBall).

The shorter more rounded RN bullets were developed to increase the length of bullet base/bearing surface which gets seated deeper in the case neck to produce greater neck tension for more consistent chamber pressures (Like CN and SWC). But if your barrel has shorter leade, the longer more pointed RN may work better. My newest Lone Wolf barrel with very short leade won't work with MBC SmallBall but Dardas/Z-Cast with "stepped" RN will work with 1.125" OAL (UPDATE: See comments on new MBC SmallBall on next post).

So with ACME 124 gr RN, if using new profile, 1.125" OAL may work and if using old profile, 1.080" may work. But since barrels come with different leade/free bore length and start angle of rifling, you need to use your barrel to determine the max OAL and function test by feeding/chambering dummy rounds from the magazine to determine the working OAL - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...l-with-your-bullet.506678/page-2#post-8864541

When MBC came out with SmallBall, I found 1.080" to work with most barrels and MBC now recommends 1.080" OAL on their website - http://missouribullet.com/details.php?prodId=391&category=5&secondary=8&keywords=

This is update to my previous post. Apparently MBC has redesigned the 124 gr RN (SmallBall) Hi-Tek 2 nose profile - You can tell the new bullet by a small flat tip compared to old bullet with rounded tip. The new bullet now even works with my Lone Wolf barrel with short leade.

As to powder, I have used 3.8-4.0 gr W231/HP-38 with MBC 124 gr RN (SmallBall) loaded to 1.080" with good results.

BTW, MBC Hi-Tek coated 124 gr RN sells for $35/500 and they offer 5% THR discount ($33.25/500 after discount). Check bottom of this post for vendors offering 5% THR discount codes - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/thank-you-thr-pay-it-forward.760272/

1.110" OAL with .378" taper crimp worked in KKM/Lone Wolf barrel with longer leade and 1.050" OAL with .378" taper crimp worked in Lone Wolf barrel with shorter leade.

As far as load... I run Lee RN 1.060, and RNFP 1.065. Both are fairly deep IMO. Out of 5" MP2.0 3.9 HP238 was most accurate for me (2.4" off hand, which is good for me at 15y). Slightly larger groups found at 4.2 WSF and 3.8 TG.

YMMV, verify safely of course

I have you use 700x in the 9mm, sorry.

I use a lot of W231/HP-38 in 9mm range ammo. For me, a 124gr coated cast bullet over 4.0gr W231 is a soft shooting and accurate load. You can also load 4.4gr W231 if you want more for your load. Even though you want to use up your 700x give the W231/HP-38 loads a try.

Here is some 9mm 700x data, using my own cast 125 grain Lee RN bullets. It was only three shots per string, but it gives you some idea.

Walther P1

3.9 grains 700x Lee 125 .358” not quenched CCI SPP Heavy LLA+JPW lube
1023 1049 1040 Avg 1037 ES 26 SD 13.

Second string Avg 1041 ES 14 SD 5

My most accurate 125 grain cast loads were with Unique, and Power Pistol has proven to be excellent too, even reduced... My 9mm's seem to like propellants on the slower side of the propellant speed curve. WW231 is about as "fast" as I recall giving very good accuracy, but no loads with any suitable propellant stick out as being lousy. Good luck.
