I am in the process of cooking up a load for a friend's AR. I have loaded many 223/5.56x45 loads but never for an AR. Does anyone have a load that works good in an AR with the old 55 FMJBT bullet. I will be using LC cases,WSR Primers and for powder either IMR 4895, WW748,AA 2230 or possibly IMR 4064. I am trying to approximate the old V/N era load. I have used IMR 4895 in the past and it worked fine in my son's Mini 14. I have never clocked any of my previous loads so I really am not sure if I was in the ball park for velocity. The loads were sort of average for accuracy but cycled the Mini just fine.Any help will be greatly appreciated.:):D

Back when I started loading for ARs I tried some different loads listed in various loading manuals.
Lo and behold, my favorite universal .223 load is still listed in a well recognized one.

Look on Hodgdon's website. Just remember that the original spec was 3300 fps out of a 20" barrel. That's too hot for me. I prefer 3000 fps out of my 20" AR which puts the load at about 80% SAAMI max rather than 100%+.

either IMR 4895, WW748,AA 2230 or possibly IMR 4064.
Any of the first three will work just fine. The 55 Gr FMJ is not a particularly accurate bullet anyway.

:)I believe I'll use AA 2230 and work from there.2230 meters much better through my powder measure than any of the stick powders. W748 may also be good, I am nearly out of that and with the current panic not sure if my local supplier has any. I have a good supply of 2230 that I bought nearly 4 years ago during the last panic.:evil:Thanks all.:)

I've loaded the IMR 4064 for an AR, with 55gr fmj, very accurate load. The 4064 is a real pain to pour though, and it fills the case pretty full. It was very accurate out of my 14.5 in AR and cycled fine.

Since AA2230 was developed for use in the .223 that's the powder I would use of those you listed. My second choice of those would be W748. I like ball powders in the .223/5.56mm.

I use 26.0 gr W748, that's my standard load in 223. Loaded to 2.245", runs around 2870 fps out of a 16" barrel. Expect around 2980 - 3000 fps from the 20".
