Got out to the range today to test some .45 acp uspsa loads for this weekend and I fired my test batches of 9mm power pistol. I took the charge down to 5.6, and tested at 5.8 again. Results for 5.6: SD 10.4, ES 39, avg 1239. 5.8: SD 12, ES 42, avg 1255. Still faster than it should be.... I'm confused. Ejection was fine at 5.6, about 5 feet of distance. Accuracy was good at 15 yds from the bench. Anymore ideas ?

Well I just got my order of 2000 rmr 124gr matchwinners. I worked up loads of power pistol 4.4-5.2 in .2gr increments. And cfe pistol 4.4-5.2. Coal 1.0985-1.10. I guess we'll see how they do. I have a friend coming to the range with his chrono so I'll be able to verify on two different chrono's. How do these work ups look?

The workups look a little low and slow (like my smoker) with Alliant's max at 6.4gr at 1.12 COAL for Gold Dot bullets. But I would start low also due to the bullets having a different nose profile and probably different seating depths. Especially with the issue we're trying to figure out.
I do think it is narrowed down to two things.
1. You have a hot bottle of powder, which is not good.
2. Your Chrono is out of calibration.
How did your uspsa 45acp loads do on the Chrono?
Are you still using the Remington 5 1/2 primers for all the loads your testing? We still can discount the hotter primers, but I never notice them being that much hotter when I was using them. But I didn't check either.

Do you have standard primers you could try also?
Or possibly your friend could duplicate one of your loads with standard primers and you could try side by side comparison between yours and his with a different bottle of PP. (if he has any)
I would take your Chrono with you also, so you could compare your loads over both Chrono's to eliminate the Chronograph from the problem completely.
I'm still curious about your 45 ACP loads from post 26.

These 9mm loads were worked up using cci 500's. my friend can't make it to the range today and he only uses sport pistol, but I have 3 factory 9mm loads to chrono for a control group: aguila 115, federal 115, and sig m17 124gr +p. As far as the .45 acp loads went they were OK about 60fps faster than hornday 11th predicted for a 5.3gr hp38 load, but I was .1 over their max, mine were 5.4. My coal for todays test is 1.0985-1.100. All rounds plunked and spun freely, dummies cycled perfectly in all 3 pistols. Heading out now, ill have a range report in a few hours.

Range report: gun used Sig p226 4.4in barrel.

Cfe pistol, federal cases, cci 500, rmr 124gr matchwinners, coal 1.0985-1.100.

4.4gr, SD 12.2, avg 938, ES 46, hi 967, lo 921
4.6gr, SD 14.9, avg 985, ES 47, hi 1013, lo 966
4.8gr, SD 12.8, avg 1019, ES 46, hi 1041, lo 995
5.0gr, SD 10.4, avg 1039, ES 41, hi 1065, lo 1024
5.2gr, SD 6.8, avg 1120, ES 21, hi 1130, lo 1109

Power pistol, same test gun and cartridge dimensions as above.
4.4gr, SD 10.6, avg 905, ES 38, hi 923, lo 885
4.6gr, SD 10.2, avg 961, ES 36, hi 976, lo 940
4.8gr, SD 10.8, avg 1010, ES 36, hi 1025, lo 989
5.0gr, SD 10.4, avg 1045, ES 25, hi 1060, lo 1035
5.2gr, SD 9.6, avg 1078, ES 24, hi 1087, lo 1063

Power pistol loads were extremely accurate especially the 5.2gr load (see picture below). Cfe pistol accuracy was not as good as Power pistol but still acceptable. I shot at 20 yds from the bench. Lower charge weights of both powders cycled the gun but just barely, cases were slighy sooty, as charge weight increased ejection got better and cases got less and less sooty (obviously right?) The 5.2 grain loads of both powders seemed perfect. I'll be making up 100 of each 5.2gr load tonight for testing tomorrow in the p210.
Do these numbers jive with anyone else's testing? Especially Power pistol?

Sorry, I work 12 hour days and got behind on my reading.

Your CFE Pistol numbers look right in line with published data.
How did your factory loads look?
If they are in line with MFG data, then you have to have a hot bottle of Power Pistol powder. I'm really glad you downloaded it to get it to where it's supposed to be. A lot of people wouldn't have even checked it.
I like to compare against published data. I'd like to think their equipment is a lot better than mine.

I've only burnt about 6lbs of Power Pistol and it all seemed to be a little behind what published data says. But that's the way it usually is. I can seldom get what published data says I'm supposed to get, if ever.
I use Power Pistol in my .357s and check them with my Magneto Speed.

The only advise I can give you now, with the Power Pistol you have, is call Alliant Powder and tell them this whole story. They may want the remainder of the bottle for their lab to check.
I would give them a call if it were me. They may have some information for you about that lot number of powder, you won't know until you call and ask them.
