I am new to BP and have been shown how to load and shoot my 36 colt but was curious about the lube part. Now I was told load 22gr Pyrodex then ball then crisco and fire away. Now is it better to make these lube pills, use felt patches, both, should they go after the powder or the ball, and is this just for accuracy or what??? Thanks

I prefer to load....

Front of Chamber
Ball/Bullet
Lube Pill
Card Wad/Cork wad
Powder
Rear/nipple

I make my lube pills with 1lb each Beeswax and crisco and add 8oz peanut oil.
This is set into a 1/4" sheet (on a cookie sheet). Stamp out the 'pills' with a 45 colt shell (or 38 special for the 36 cal revs). Trick to this is to enlarge the primer hole so that you can put an 8d nail through it. With the head on this INSIDE of the shell case, you can push on the nails shank and pop out the pills easy!!
I make the card wad by stamping out of 'Pepsi/Coke can boxes' with a 7/16 hollow punch (for 44 cal, you can get a punch for 36cal). The reason for the card wad is to stop the wax lube pill from contaminating the powder. Cork works the same way, and will soak up a little lube if it melts. Stamp these out of standard cork tiles.
The lube does a real nice job of keeping the BP fouling nice and soft.

I bet I know you. ;)

The crisco helps contain the sparkie sparks so you dont chain fire...which mine did once anyway.

'least that's what i thought.

Powder, Cous Cous , Lube, Ball or Powder Cous Cous Ball Crisco, or Powder Ball Crisco or Powder Lube Pill Crisco.

Dependent upon powder amount being loaded.

I tend to use reduced charges for accuracy. Something needs to fill the leftover power space so the ball will be near the front of the chamber. I use a lubed wad, or sometimes cream of wheat or cornmeal under the ball. The lubed wad helps keep fouling down also.
