I just loaned a Winchester Model 101 to my neighbors 12 year old son. It's Full over Mod. He's mature for his age and is a 20+ singles trap shooter. The gun fits him well except the length of pull is a little short. I'm willing to put an adjustable pad on it for him I've he will work at the sport.

I told him that he can be a competitive junior shooter if he works at it. He and his dad seemed to be excited by the act. I'm looking for reassurance that this was the right thing to do. Other than the fact that the gun kicks like a mule does anyone have any negative feedback?

He's been shooting an 11-87.

You won't get one word of it from me! That was a noble act you did. If the young man is already shooting 20+ on the traprange with a 20, he's already off to a goodstart. Good on you. :D

I would suggest that you loaned the gun to the boy's father. It is illegal in my state for someone other than a parent or guardian to provide a firearm to a minor:

A. It shall be unlawful for any person within this state to sell or give to any child any of the arms or weapons designated in Section 1272 of this title; provided, the provisions of this section shall not prohibit a parent from giving his or her child a rifle or shotgun for participation in hunting animals or fowl, hunter safety classes, target shooting, skeet, trap or other recognized sporting events, except as provided in subsection B of this section.

I am absolutely in favor of young shooters - as long as they are mature enough to follow the directions of instuctors/parents immediately, competently and without fail.
